Mac OS X Tips - Lots of software hacks

Posted by: the JoshMeister
on: 06/05/12 02:22 AM

Since the "Software Hacks & Mods" section of the forums has been quiet for a while, I thought I'd mention a site I subscribe to that posts Mac OS X software hacks and tricks about once a month:

Mac OS X Tips .co.uk

As of when I'm posting this, they just added a hack for bringing back "Save As" in Lion. There are plenty of other tricks in the archives. The site's definitely worth checking out and subscribing.

I'm not affiliated with the site, but I like its content so I hope it stays around for years to come.

If you've got any interesting mods for any Apple products (hardware or software), please drop me a line at podcast(at)mactech.com or mention it in a tweet to @MacTechLive. If it's particularly good, it might get a retweet, and if it's really special I may consider doing a podcast episode about it.

The 9 Coolest Hacks Of 2009

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 12/29/09 06:51 AM

A few of those have been around for years. The ATM malware has been around since banks have switched to a Windows based ATM software. The Browser-Based 'Darknet' has been around since the late 90s but it has been greatly improved since then.

I found the PDF HP released about their findings and how it can be used to improve the WWW altogether.

The Hackintosh guide

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 12/25/09 06:42 PM

That is the main reason why a true Apple costs so much, they use high quality hardware. It's still cheaper to build a Hackintosh. The most you would have to dump money into one is for the CPU, everything else is cheaper.

Oh, here is a old wiki page I made for the old MacMod site.

Playing with EFI Framework

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 11/19/09 06:32 PM

Doubt it with just the frame work. If I had a ROM dump of a intel mac the tools of the trade I could figure out something. Really and truthfully if some one was smart enough they could build a EFI system to lay on top (IE load into RAM) kinda like OpenBIOS and use a chain loader to boot up OS X.

Besides with all of the hackers, programmers and technologists out in the world they will find a easy way to make 10.6.2 to run on normal PC hardware.

A better layout for older Hackintoshes

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 05/12/09 04:57 AM

Systems that cant emulate EFI or early EFI emulated systems are subject to crashes after a update. Even if the update is OSx86 compatible it can still be unstable due to the hardware that is in play.

To make things simple I create a three partition system with a single 160GB hard drive (Plenty for my needs).

System 8GB - Main OS partition
Main 52GB - Holds Users directory, custom extensions and backup use
Applications 100GB - To store all of my applications

Installed the system like usual onto the System partition. After the install was complete I copied the Applications to the Applications directory and the Users directory to the Main partition. I rebooted and used the install CD once again and used Terminal and deleted the Applications directory in the System partition and issued this command ln -s /Volumes/Applications/Applications Applications This creates a shortcut in the System partition. I did the same thing with the Users directory and Main partition.

For my custom extensions I created a bash script that copies and sets the permissions.

I also created a disk dump of the System partition and burned it to a double layer DVD so if things mess up I can use a Linux Live CD and restore the partition and be back to normal. But in all if the system crashes I can just reinstall but if I update to say 10.5.6 that works flawlessly I can use a updated disk dump.

Also this method can be used with multiple drives.

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 05/13/09 08:48 AM

Depends on the nForce chipset. The what I call "aftermarket kernels" support nForce chipsets but you'll still run into problems like ethernet, wireless and sound. People that do use AMD products use desktops and drop in compatible parts to bypass the stuff that isn't compatible. For all you know you might end up having just the basic hardware like VESA video, storage, optical and keyboard.
