Two hard drives, two operating systems, one MacBoo

Posted by: six_of_one
on: 05/02/13 04:11 PM

Hey there!

I have the same setup and it works great!

You'll definitely need to put the SSD in the hard drive bay and leave it there. The SSDs I've tried haven't worked very well in the optical bay.

If you'd be using the MackBook Pro to install Windows onto the SSD, you'll need to do that with the optical drive still installed -- on that model MacBook Pro there's no way to install Windows via anything other than the internal optical drive (USB sticks and external optical/hard drives will not work) ...

After you've got your OSes and stuff installed and running on your SSD, then you can swap-out the optical for your old mechanical HD. Be aware, though, that if you have to reinstall Windows, or repair it from a bootable recovery disk, you'll need to get the optical drive back in the machine ...

As for Windows running apps off a second disk, I've never tried that -- I don't know if Windows needs those apps to be on the same partition as the OS or not ...

Other than that, there shouldn't be any issues -- I have three laptops that have run very well with that configuration. And with the possible exception of maxing-out the RAM, installing an SSD is probably the single best improvement you can make to those machines -- you won't believe how zippy they are! =)

Running Windows 95/98 games on PowerPC Mac

Posted by: hoosier83
on: 12/24/12 05:58 PM

So after scouring the internet and trying to play a few old Windows 95/98 games (Command & Conquer) on my PowerBook G4 PowerPC Mac laptop, I've decided to try this forum. If I had an intel Mac I could use playonmac, but they have quit supporting the PowerPC format. Does anyone know of anything else, or know of a place to download old versions of playonmac? Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays!

I don't usually try and help her, but this seemed like such a simple thing all PCs ought to be able to do and see on web pages.

It probably is. Finally got the file .exe I needed and when I went to install it, it said I needed Admin privs. Well, yes! Her PC guy fixed it so she couldn't accidentally screw it up or her grand kids couldn't install messy junque on her PC. That was a good idea, but that was as far as I could go.

So near, yet so far.

Thanks Nut Dood.

.

How to reset Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 Passwords

Posted by: Jim_
on: 11/03/11 12:46 PM

Originally Posted By: NucleusG4

Why would I need to reset and Windows passwords.. yuk yuk.
I reset Windows passwords by taking said computer and throwing it into the trashcan.

LOL. I know, I suggest that but they don't listen. Unfortunately there are some business apps that only run on Windows, so we will never be totally rid of the scourge.

I run across this now and then. I have had two in the last three weeks where people have changed their password but forgot what they changed it to. It's actually less secure on Windows. On Windows when I change the password it gives full access to the machine. On the Macs, booting off of the installer and running the Password Reset app changes the log in password but not the keychain password, it keeps the old password. If someone forgets the log in password on a Mac and I change it they then have to trash the keychain and start a new one.

I hate working on Windows machines, but it's money in my pocket, what can I say, I'm a turncoat, sosumi. I usually have to come home and brush my teeth, delouse, shower, and change clothes afterwards.

Best software for running windows?

Posted by: IndigoKidz
on: 03/11/12 05:47 PM

I know that by now you've probably already purchased what you needed, but this may help someone else that comes across this post.

If you are attending college, and even K-12, most software/ hardware companies will give a nice discount for students. I know that both Apple & Windows does this. You may even get a better discount by going through your university/ community college.

I purchased the Adobe CS 5 Creative Master suite (usually a $2,000+ software package) for about $600!!! I also purchased Windows7 (no restrictions) for $90!

Not all colleges or schools offer the same discount (I purchased mine through Phoenix University, directly), but it is still a substantial savings! If your school doesn't offer this, go directly through Apple, (or Windows, Dell, HP, etc) websites. Look for student discount. You have to provide some info to proof that you are a student, (though if your school provides this to you directly, you won't. Just log-in through your school, and shop. At least thats how Phoenix online did it. Took some searching to find the store though). And remember, this is true for ALL Students! Regardless of grade!! You can purchase computers, Software (all kinds), etc! Some universities even offer discounted prices on TV's, Travel packages, etc.!!

I hope this helps save some (or a bunch) of $$$$ for someone! Cheers

Heather

But it crashes more than my than a blind man in a car race. Is there anything I can do to make my favorite browser more stable? I also hate how when it crashes you loose all your open windows every other browser have fixed that lets move with the times :S
