Need help with some Imac g5 mods

Posted by: Dremel Junkie
on: 12/14/11 12:25 AM

Hey - repurposing this as a second monitor is a really good idea. I myself actually repurposed the iMac G5 20" iSight as an external monitor. I have never modded the 17" iMac G5, however I am done considerable work with the iMac G4 (17 and 20") and the iMac G5 20", so I am fairly certain that I can help you. The first generation G5s, I believe used the same exact panel as the G4, the LG LM171W02(A4)(M1). I think the later G5s, the iSIghts, used a slightly different variation. I am fairly certain that they are all compatible (the 20" panels were all compatible). Which generation do you have, is it an iSight? The G4s and G5s all used TMDS for their signaling to the LCD itself. TMDS is a digital signal that is used in HDMI and DVI. As such, the LCD can be converted to DVI or HDMI, you would need a Digital to Analog converter if you needed it to be VGA or S-video.

Please see this page of my blog:
http://dremmeljunkie.blogspot.com/2011/01/17-dvi-pinout-confirmed.html
This is the pinout for the 17"iMac G4, I am fairly certain this will work for you. The columns you care about are the first and the last one. The first column is the in number when looking at the JAE connector that plugs into the LCD itself (From Left to Right with the exposed pins facing you). The colors are only relevant to the iMac G4. The last column is which pin on a FEMALE DVI CONNECTOR these should hook up to. Remember you also must power the inverter and the LCD panel itself. 3 pins should connect to a 3.3V or 5V power source and 3 to a ground. In addition you have to add an extra wire using a 1Kohm resistor.

For a step by step guide of how this is done with the iMac G4 see this post:http://dremmeljunkie.blogspot.com/2011/08/guide-step-by-step-17-imac-g4-tmds-to.html

You just need to go by pin number and not color. I can not 100% guarantee success but this should work.

Also, if you have the iSight version, I can tell you how to convert the camera and mic to USB if you are interested.

Hope this helps, Jon

Homemade projector idea

Posted by: TCPMeta
on: 01/19/06 12:05 PM

Well the car lights work very well but instead of having one I had to wire up too. I'm using a 18.5volt power supply for this. 12v isn't strong enough, gives me a faded image. 18.5v is the borderline. I'm not sure what the Lumens are on the bulbs, I've used the same bulbs before in my toyota and they don't have that yellowish orange tint to it, They're are white. As for cooling the bulbs I have taken a box fan and built a air vent out of cardboard going to the projector. It looks kinda getto but it's all covered with a black sheet and only the lens and fan in sight.

Creating a Mod Guide

Posted by: krusher117
on: 06/01/04 03:16 PM

So you just created a cool mod that you want to share with the world. Don't hold back. It's a lot easier than you think. First of all, let us say, there is ONE tiny little detail to watch out for; our site-integrated WSYWIG editor is only compatible with Mozilla and Firefox right now. Safari compatibilitiy is pending.

Step 1: Log in
Step 2: Click "Create Mod Guide" in the user menu
Step 3: Select the appropriate category
Step 4: You'll now see the submission page with subject, category, intro text, and body. Be descriptive and SHORT int he subject (eg. 12" iBook logo in the apple mod). Place your mod into the appropriate category using the drop down menu. Next use the intro text to post ONE OR TWO sentences about the mod. Use the body section for all the details and pics. Please upload your pics
.

STEP 5: Submit your mod. Don't worry about the other tabs at the top (eg. Metadata, images, etc.)
STEP 6: You are DONE! Mod will be available for review to the admins and is generally posted in 24 hours.

Post edited by: krusher117, at: 2004/06/01 18:53

Post edited by: krusher117, at: 2004/06/01 20:23

Post edited by: oojacoboo, at: 2004/06/06 15:12
