I tried the QT route too, but no luck. I'll try again.

   

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/15/08 10:08 PM

Ha . . . went back to iTMS directly through iTunes, and now some of the movies have a rent button. But some have only a rent button, like 300 and Blades of Glory. Ratatouille has both a buy and a rent button. I wonder if the newer movies aren't purchasable yet.

   

What's the selection like? I don't recall Steve saying--although having all the big studios is a good start.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

So now my rent button is there. But the selection isn't so big right now. This is what's new in rentals:

my photos

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/16/08 03:44 PM

Yeah, it may take a while to increase the selection. But, you watch, one day you'll go in there and the selection will be ginormous.

I have no doubt the studios are learning as they go, about converting their libraries into exploding video and what we are seeing on iTS right now is the token offering of movie favorites.

First they'll have to get the more recent stuff out there and then they'll start tapping into the classics. I would love to rent some of the old television shows from the Fifties & Sixties too.

M i c h a e l (OFI)

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/16/08 05:35 PM

Got my first rental this morning. Live Free or Die Hard.

Worked just fine ...started watching it about a minute after I purchased it with no hiccups. It puts another category over with the Movies/TV Shows/Music ...called Rentals.

Before you start the movie it prompts you and asks if you are sure you want to start it because you will only have 24hrs to finish. In the rental view it shows how much time the movie has left (mine has 13 more hrs)

I did try and open the file directly in QT to see if it would play ...I couldn't get it to ...it said Authorization was required. It's got an .m4v extension. ~1.5 GB

Any other questions?

zweisoft
Do you have SnapzPro? Could you record it on that?

   

I saw a reference somewhere to 1000 titles "within a month." Not sure if that's accurate. But it sounds possible if any of these studio agreements were last minute. It will then take time to decide which movies to encode and get it done.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Isn't there a free movie/screen capture app someone can try it with?

Come to think of it, my sister got us an iTunes gift card, maybe I'll try it with SnapzPro.

The Graphic Mac for your Mac and graphics news, tips and more.

Try changing the date on your computer. TUAW's post about it

In reply to:

you could affect the time remaining on an iTunes movie rental by altering your system time. I gave it a shot to be sure. It's true, if you're willing to offset the date on your computer until you finally have time to watch that movie, you can get past the 30-day time limit.

It was also noted that if you fast-forward your calendar to the due date of a rental, iTunes will remove the movie from the library but apparently not from your drive.

my photos

You know the problem with publicly broadcasting these "creative workarounds" is that Apple WILL see them and "fix" them!

The Graphic Mac for your Mac and graphics news, tips and more.

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/16/08 10:20 PM

Maybe you're OK as long as you never hit Pause

BTW, although some blame Apple for wanting a 24-hour limit, there are signs that the content owners are the ones who demanded it. And the reason may be because PPV has that same limit, and the movie studios don't want to aggravate the cable companies too much:

http://daringfireball.net/linked/2008/january#wed-16-vod

Hopefully they will give on that issue in future.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/17/08 07:12 AM

Here's what happens after it expires. If it's playing ..it keeps playing. You get a warning if you try to pause/stop it. You CAN scrub the video to your hearts content though. Also, judging by the ability to capture the picture with the standard OS X screenshot ...I'm sure Snapz Pro could capture the audio/video.

zweisoft
So is the resolution close to HD or less than?

And the 24-hour limit is broken until the next update

Someone will write a util (if not an Automator action) that scrubs the first few seconds of the movie to keep it live until you're ready 3 weeks later!

(I wonder if just putting a book on your mouse button would hold the scrubber still and have the same effect?)

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/17/08 02:45 PM

It's reg DVD res. I thought the quality was great, though. Wish I could check out one of the HD movies, but I'm not gonna buy an AppleTV to try it

zweisoft
Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/17/08 02:48 PM

When I tested it I didn't even have to keep scrubbing. I let the movie end normally and waited 10 minutes. then I just clicked in the window again and it restarted at the beginning. You could just let it play all the way through and not close the window.

zweisoft
Re: Are the iTunes rentals working yet?? - 01/17/08 11:12 PM

Regular DVD res... as in better than iTunes movie purchases? (Which are 640x480 and then the vertical is cropped for letterboxing, resulting in less than DVD's typical 720x480. At least I assume iTunes movie purchases are the same as iTunes TV show purcahses: Battlestar Galactica is 640x360.)

That's cool about "just letting it play." Now, what if you did that BEFORE the time was up, and it hit the end and sat there... when the time limit came up would you lose the movie? I'm wondering whether you have to start play so that playback "crosses the deadline" in order to get the behavior you describe.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net
