NUTD 5.3.1 stalls out

I have NUTD 5.3.1 running on a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11. Within the last couple of weeks when I try to add a new appointment or To Do I get the 'colorful spinning wheel' and it takes about 5-15 minutes to before I can do anything with it. I also get the same response when I try to check off an 'To Do'. It doesn't do it all the time but most of the time.

I have tried to repair the permissions but it doesn't seem to help.

Any ideas or suggestions?
