Thought these things were indestructible?? The case is but did not protect the phone. Puppy knocked it out of my son's hand onto laminate, about 4 foot drop.

Did it land flat, face down?

The good news is that it's probably just the glass and Apple will replace for $35.00 while you wait.

Michael, I don't know.

NG4, are you sure? Someone told me $150

Re: Otterbox fail - 02/12/14 11:03 AM

It will probably be around $150. The back glass is probably $35 but not the front. The phone needs to be pretty much totally taken apart.

I see it can be done locally here for $70 by a third party.

If you look on youtube you'll see it's quit a project to DIY. DIY will void the warranty too, I don't know if a third party doing it will, probably so though.

I read where if you ask really nice they may sell you AppleCare+ for $99, then use one of two instances of the $49 fix, leaving you with one $49 fix left, and costing $149 total.

Oh.. yeah.. if this a iP4 and it's the front then they have to take off back glass, pull inards, and then get to the front glass.

Is this phone a 4 or 4s?

4s

Re: Otterbox fail - 02/12/14 03:30 PM

4 and 4s were the only ones that necessitated going thru the back to get to the front. I guess that's why they changed it at the 5.
I guess $150.00 is the right answer then.

Got an iClinic nearby? They are Apple certified and are very reasonable. My iPhone4 screen repair was $90 there. They also have reduced rates for returning customers with the same phone if it happens again.

There are only 2 iclinics and they are both in FL

Re: Otterbox fail - 02/13/14 08:36 PM

I'm sure the iClinic is not a chain, but if you shop around your area you may find a place that is "blessed" by the mighty Apple, AASP, Apple Authorized Service Provider, that will do it cheaper than a Genius.

Then again if your contract is up pony up a few bucks more than a repair for a 5s. The 4 was discontinued 3.5 years ago. The 5s is many time times faster better screen resolution camera improvement 4 year newer technology. Serious IMHO.

BTW, the Otterbox fail was an anomaly. May have hit perfectly flat to make the glass flex and crack. Physics, momentum, and gravity thing. That's probably why Michael asked about how it landed.

Yeah, been looking. Got a lead on a friend of my brother's that will do it for $80.

Ponying up for a new phone is $$. We usually sell the phone that's due for the upgrade at the price of a new one ($200) so out of pocket expenses are minimal.
