My G3 looses the date/time every time the power cord is disconnected, so I guess I need a battery.
I left it plugged in over the weekend, so it's had plenty of time to charge, so the battery must be bad.
I'm new to Macs, so I don't have anything to trade.

It's a small (1/2 AA) located on the board. Radio Shack has them. That could also be generating your boot problems.

Got it. Kinda steep for a battery, but the thing DOES seem to do better.

Radio Shack, or one of the chain battery stores are OK if you need a battery right away, and it's the only place you can find one, but the prices are ridiculous (Last time I priced one at Radio Shack it was US$16.95 +tax).
Better to look for it online if you can. Even with shipping charges it'll often be cheaper than retail.
