Let the disinformation begin! - 11/03/13 08:09 AM

So, Dayton being pretty conservative — quite Pee Tarty friendly, in fact — today's Dayton Daily News has a lengthy article about policy cancellation notices some people have received. This pathetic rag requires a paid subscription, so I won't bother posting a link. But below is the comment I posted this morning, and a later comment by another reader: sick
Me
Quote:
I would ask these folks who's policies are being cancelled to review their annual deductibles and caps. Whether or not preventive care is free. What the amount of their copays are — on care and especially prescriptions. I would ask if their current policy doesn't cover things like maternity (whether you're of child-bearing age or not) what else isn't covered that has to come out of their own pocket?

I would also submit that if your income is such that another $70/month is a hardship, you likely will qualify for a subsidy that will render your ACA plan premium the same or less than what you have now.

For those who say their employers are canceling their group coverage, if you are among 50 or fewer fellow employees, nothing — I repeat — nothing changes. If the company you work for has more than 50 employees and they are cutting your hours to dodge the law's requirement, that's on your boss — not the Gov't. Any intelligent and forward-thinking business owner knows that a healthier workforce means greater productivity, which means increased profitability, less turnover, and a more competitive business model.

Time to stop believing the right wing fear tactics and the Fox disinformation machine. Read up. Ask questions. Get INFORMED. You might just discover that you're going to be better off. What concept!

As Prof. Erwin Corey would say… HOWEVER!

It could be said that one man's junk is another man's bronze.

Of course, the difference is that some people couldn't even buy junk policies, and these at least provide some reasonable minimums.

But wait, there's more… One reason we're seeing stories of insane premium increases under the ACA. mad

And then there's this.

Aetna and UHC utterly suck. I've had horrible experiences with both. And it pains me that my Medicare supplemental and Part D policies are UHC via AARP. And I refuse to go to Humana because they're even sleazier. I just re-upped, and will hope that a year from now, when open enrollment comes around again, there will be better options.

I really really wish Obama and the Dems had not caved on the single-payer option.

They continue to believe that they had coverage on the cheap: High deductible, restricted coverage, no well visits, no preventive measures. The plans that were discontinued were virtually worthless and they want to complain about it! The next time they show up at the ER, they should have to pay up front first!

The state of Illinois has just offered its 'over 65' retirees a Medicare Advantage plan offered by United Healthcare after 'kicking' them out of the state-sponsored supplemental plan they have been in for decades.
From what I read on the 'internets', United Healthcare (heavily endorsed ny AARP!) is 'kicking out' doctors all over the US.
WTF is a 'Medicare Advantage' plan?

A Medicare Advantage plan takes the place of a Medicare A+ Medicare B with a supplemental plan like Blue Cross/ Blue Shield or Humana or someone else. SO why have all this ?
well Medicare A pays Hospital and
Medicare B pays Drs visits, clinics, etc, BUT you're still stuck with 20% of the out patient costs. SO many on Medicare keep a supplemental plan to pay the other 20% -like Blue Cross/ Blue Shield or Humana...so they have very little out of pocket expenses. On a fixed Sr income even 20% can be tough !

Medicare Advantage is like having the above but without the 3rd company. The Advantage is similar to your other coverage. Now you won't have 20% out of pocket expenses, but it doesn't cover 100% of your costs either, but it's cheaper than a 3rd policy. They try to give Srs as many options as possible.
Make sense?

I say Medicare for all and screw the private providers ! grin

Indeed, I had a 15 minute or so episode of checking into the latest thinking on whether viruses were alive or not because of another post you made. The case does seem to be, by the definitions given for life by science, viruses don't quite cut the mustard.

Yes - here's the summation I give in class.
1. They can't survive /replicate without a host cell (small group of bacteria fall here- Chlamydia and Rickettsia- the rest can !)
2. They have no organelles like cells (neither do bacteria).
3. They cannot make their own ATP (neither can Chlamydia but all other bacteria can).

BUT 4. they also lack ribosomes (bacteria have them).
5. They have no basic metabolism. (bacteria DO)
6. They have only 1 nucleic acid DNA OR RNA - (bacteria and all other "living organisms" have both DNA & RNA !)
That pretty much makes them infectious particles.
They also have very small genomes (<5% the size of most bacteria) and very few proteins associated with the nucleic acid.

Interesting debate no matter where you fall.

What really pi$$es me off is that IF I sign up for this 'Advantage' plan, I will NOT be allowed to add a supplemental policy to essentially cover me 'head to toe' and bring down my expenses to almost zero.
Also, just about everyone tells me that a) some doctors do NOT accept 'Advantage' plans, and b) a 'Medigap' plan is More expensive but provides better and less restrictive coverage. Any truth to that?

Re: Let the disinformation begin! - 11/07/13 05:00 AM

Not sure about the Medigap, but can check on it. Good question.

I just kept my BC/BS and Plans A+B... not the cheapest, but I gotta cover the wife who's 61.
There may be cheaper plans but in the long run I believe the risk of high medical co-Pays will offset the cost of the plan.... i.e. pay now, or pay more later... much more ! eek

But it's all a crap shoot because we don't know the future. frown

Yup, the so-called Advantage plans can actually put you at a disadvantage. And they ain't cheap! They most definitely are not for everyone.

I thought 'Medigap' plans are all those Medicare supplemental plans that people buy to pay for the things Medicare doesn't cover?
