Today, President Barack Obama invoked “executive privilege” pertaining to the “Fast and Furious” gunwalking debacle, which leaves Attorney General Eric Holder free from having to provide subpoenaed documents to the House Oversight and Reform Committee. Nonetheless, the Oversight Committee voted to charge the Attorney General with “Contempt of Congress” late this afternoon! Please see my extremely important update below – Mat.

gary,

President Barack Obama, who has repeatedly promised the American people a transparent administration, once again denied Congress and the American people access to vital information this morning.

In a tense showdown with congressional investigators, and at the last possible minute, President Obama invoked “executive privilege” to shield Attorney General Holder from having to release documents to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee pertaining to the botched and deadly “Fast and Furious” gunwalking operation.

I believe this clearly politically-motivated action on the President’s part will ultimately backfire. The America people want answers and accountability! This is no mere political “witch hunt,” as has been alleged by Holder’s supporters.

The question American leaders, citizens, and members of the media are asking now is…

What are Barack Obama and Eric Holder hiding by invoking executive privilege?

++President Obama strongly denounced executive privilege as a candidate.

During a 2007 CNN appearance, then presidential candidate Barack Obama vehemently accused the Bush administration of…

“[hiding] behind executive privilege every time there’s something a little shaky that’s taking place. And I think the administration would be best served by coming clean on this…”

Upon learning of the President’s assertion of executive privilege, Senator Chuck Grassley declared that the move “raises monumental questions.” Sen. Grassley is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is also investigating “Fast and Furious.”

“How can the President assert executive privilege if there was no White House involvement? How can the president exert executive privilege over documents he’s supposedly never seen? Is something very big being hidden to go to this extreme? The contempt citation is an important procedural mechanism in our system of checks and balances,” Grassley said.

++Meanwhile, Congress is finally taking action!

Late this afternoon, the House Oversight and Reform Committee voted to charge Attorney General Eric Holder with “Contempt of Congress.” I have no doubt that Liberty Counsel Action’s powerful campaign demanding Holder’s resignation, firing, or charging him with contempt has played an important role in encouraging Congress to take action!

According to House Oversight Committee documents, the DOJ has “issued false denials, given answers intended to misdirect investigators, sought to intimidate witnesses, unlawfully withheld subpoenaed documents, and waited to be confronted with indisputable evidence before acknowledging uncomfortable facts.”

That is why Eric Holder MUST be held accountable…and why Liberty Counsel Action will continue to call for Holder’s removal from office as the contempt procedure plays out.

gary, now that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has taken this important step, I am asking you to join us in strongly emphasizing the sentiments of grassroots citizens nationwide who believe that Eric Holder is a disgrace as our nation’s Attorney General!

The next step in the process is for the entire House of Representatives to pass a motion on the contempt charge, and we must keep the pressure on and the momentum building toward that end!

Click here now to join with citizens who are demanding that Congress end the Attorney General’s blatant corruption and dereliction of duty with our powerful Fax Barrage:

++Over 100 legislators are now demanding Holder’s resignation.

Last week, Senator John Cornyn of Texas finally echoed the sentiments of millions of Americans, over 100 colleagues, and Liberty Counsel Action’s position…

“You leave me no alternative but to join those that call upon you to resign your office… Americans deserve an attorney general that will be honest with them. They deserve an attorney general who will uphold the basic standards of political independence and accountability. You've proven time and time again, sadly, that you're unwilling to do so.”

Eric Holder is continually shrouded in extreme controversy. In his three-plus years in the Obama administration, Holder’s office has been rife with scandals, deception, racial favoritism, cover-ups, doublespeak, assertion of leftist ideology, and outright dereliction in his duties as head of the Department of Justice.

The list of Attorney General Holder’s derelictions of duty and his lockstep march with President Obama’s unconstitutional mandates is now far too extensive to address in a message like this one.

Our Fax Barrage calling for action against Holder is resonating on Capitol Hill because of the relentless actions of grassroots Americans like you! Liberty Counsel Action is among the loudest voices encouraging Congress and others with influence to hold Attorney General Eric Holder accountable!

Please, even if you have done so before, click here to send an extremely timely message to Capitol Hill. Everything you need is one click away:

This President and his Attorney General, both of whom swore to uphold the Constitution, have perpetually subverted our nation’s laws, catered to special interest groups, diminished First Amendment rights and religious freedoms – and have shown an unprecedented disregard for the will of a majority of Americans!

Attorney General Eric Holder could as easily be charged with “Contempt for the American People” or “Contempt for the Constitution” as he has been in today’s charges of “Contempt of Congress”!

We, as grassroots American citizens and people of faith who hold to a higher standard of law, MUST do the right thing and never fail to challenge those who undermine the rule of law.

In light of today’s House Oversight Committee vote, the time for Congress to take action against Eric Holder’s misguided, illegal, and agenda-driven policies is NOW!

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/21/12 07:08 AM

Pure political BS. F&F was started under the Bush badministration. Holder killed it after a murder on the border that was related to the program. Holder and the WH have bent over backward for Isa's committee, but as usual with these sphincter heads, it's never enough, so they're creating yet another tempest in a teapot to discredit Holder — and by extension Obama. Y'know, one uppity bro is bad enough. But two? shocked Oh no no no no... we can't have that! smirk

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/21/12 07:22 AM

It's VERY complicated. The program was started in 2006 under Bush but was called "Wide receiver" . It was concocked by the Arizona ATF to track fire arms across the border and had some (you always wonder how much)cooperation with Mexican authorities. Holder inherited the program but by then 2009 it was renamed Fast & Furious. To make it short, one investigation went bad and one agent was killed with our own weapons. Holder shut the program down himself. Apparently ATF sold 1000s of weapons under BOTH programs BUT Issa and the House only want to investigate F&F under Holder and not the whole enchalada ! (i.e. exclude Bush years). Issa, the GOP, and their voice Fox news is trying to make it look like BOs Watergate or something - it's not even close.

In addition, one of the committee members said yesterday on Ed's radio program the DOJ & Holder turned over almost 7000 documents and some of Issa's committee requests would be illegal to do. Some involve data that Holder would have to break existing laws to divulge.
There might be some cause here, but it looks like a political witch hunt also. That's why the vote right down party lines !!

Course they're trying to say BO made this program and he's to blame for everything. sick Forget the AZ ATF, 2 other AGs before Holder and etc etc.
There's also some discussion the ATF didn't keep top officials in the DOJ in the loop on everythings and not until it went bad did a lot of details come out. In addition, these are like secret military ops - you don't put them on the "Front Page" of the newspaper. laugh You can't be transparent about EVERYTHING !! Kee-rist !!

++++

OK- did some more reading- I think the issue is "Did top officials in the DOJ (Holder) and BO know that the F&F program was using a tactic called "gunwalking"? Did agents try to interdict and capture small arms dealers or let them "walk" in hopes of catching bigger fish? DOJ says it was the AZ ATF acting without approval, others say the DOJ knew. So Issa is trying to pin this on Holder and indirectly BO... again it's an election year and investigations have been going on since 2010.

So much for "Jobs Bills" !!

Wide receiver was shut down in 2007 - basically a failure, the guns walked, the trackers lost them, nobody was arrested or indicted.

Fast and Furious wasn't initiated until 2009, basically an Obama administration attempt at doing gun walking more successfully than the prior admin did - well they did manage about 7 arrests, 6 indictments, and I think a couple of folks jailed for a few months. Many more guns were lost - on balance about as successful as the previous Bush admin attempt.

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/22/12 04:01 AM

If Obama has nothing to hide why is he excusing Holder on this Fast and Furious charges? Remember Obama always wanted Transparency on what is happening. Now this I don't know what is going on.

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/22/12 04:41 AM

You need to read up on the details. It is against the law for Holder to release the documents the committee is demanding. They want to hold him in contempt of Congress for doing his job.

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/22/12 02:15 PM

Marv,

Ditto what Steve said... he can't or he breaks the law* and then they'd hang him on that !!
They're playing political games cause they don't like Holder (or BO).
Why won't they investigate the 3 other identical programs under Bush??
mmm . . couldn't be because they're biased ?

* a Law, Congress itself passed years ago ! (talk about Catch 22) crazy

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/24/12 11:15 AM

And then there's this today:

"“The decision to invoke executive privilege is an admission that White House officials were involved in decision that misled the Congress and have covered up the truth,” Boehner told reporters last week.

But asked Sunday whether he had any evidence to back up those claims, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said “No we don’t.”"

Then why the contempt charge?

=P

Re: “Fast and Furious” - 06/24/12 11:46 AM

Forget Bush invoked it 7 times ! And this is BOs first.
