Modding a HD to accomodate a LED

I have two IDE hard drives, but none of them have external connectors for a(n) LED.  i've checked the spec sheet from the manufacturers, but the only thing I might be able to mod are the pins on the IDE port themselves.  There's a separate pin for read and write.  Would I be able to connect either one of these to a wire leading to an LED with the other wire leading to a ground pin (without blowing up the drive)?  Anything I would have to look out for ahead of time?  Thanks for the help.
