PS question for ext. FW encloser

I'm wanting to build an external firewire enclosure from scratch. I'm getting a bridge from http://www.fwdepot.com. Most likely this one here.

i need a power supply and was thinking about using an ATX power supply. But i know almost nothing about them. Can a switch be put on them like an old AT supply for immediate on and off. Or would that damge the drives and PS?
any help would be nice.

Why not look for a wall-wart style that will provide the correct DC voltage/amperage for teh hard-drive?

They aren't expensive...and would be much smaller.

EDIT: According to the specs on my own external enclosure, you would be looking at around: +5V @2.2Amps & +12V @1.5Amps for a std. 3.5in HD...

guess i should mention; i'm building one that holds about 4-8 hard drives. i was thinking ATX because it could handle that many.

something along the lines of apples Xserve RAID bay. just smaller

Ah yeah, full disclosure does make it a bit easier for us to give you responses worth a damn... :P

You can rig a switch to the green cord on the power supply and have the other end go to a ground. Have the switch so it terminates the connection between the two.

And this won't cause any dammage to the drives or powersupply...?

Nope. I have a 'Bench-Test PSU' that is wired exactly like that. Has worked fine for a long time now, never had any issues. B)
