upgrading QS to ATA 133

upgrading QS to ATA 133 - 10/29/05 06:38 PM

Hi seeing as I not have 3 x ATA 100 drives in my QS 2001 (2 on the ATA66 and 1 on the ATA33 Busses), I was thinking of adding an PCI ATA 133 card to speed things up a bit.

Is this going to make much difference to my overall system speed and if it does which cards are recommended? (my system disk is a Western Digital 120Gb with 8Mb Buffer)

BTW what is the difference between RAID and non-RAID cards

I really only want to spend about $100.

Thanx

RAID is for combining two or more physical drives into a single logical drive. The ATA bus on the QS should be 66, so boosting it to 100 or 133 will speed things up a bit if your drives are ATA100. Hard to say exactly how much you will notice the diference. If you do alot of video work, or anything requiring frequent disk access you will likely appreciate any boost you get, but otherwise it should make apps launch a bit quicker. Should boot a little faster too. Whether the increase would justify $100 is really down to how you use it. Having said that you can transfer the ATA card when you eventually upgrade the whole machine to a newer one, so it has potential to be useful for a while to come.

Thanx for the info, I will wiegh up whether I really need it then unless I can find a cheap ata card that works with my QS.
I have seen promise, skymaster and acard brand advertised for between $40 and $90 AU.

Looks like I need to do a bit more research

Thanx

Make sure you get one which will let you boot from drives on its bus(ses).
