G3, G4, Or G5 Case?

G3, G4, Or G5 Case? - 10/06/05 06:49 PM

So, as some of you know, I have decided to go ahead and build a PC for Windows gaming. I think it would be wicked-awesome if I could build it into an Apple case of some kind. I have been told that the late G3 and all G4 cases are not worth buying unless they have the power supply still inside, but is it possible to modify a regular ATX power supply to fit accordingly? Because I know that a G3 or G4 case would be selling for a LOT less than a G5. There are fewer people like me who think they're as pretty as the G5. I have found some candidates on eBay, and they are all without power supply. The two G5s are from We Fix Macs as well, which I thought was cool, because they have a store very near where I live. Maybe I should go over and see what they have in the way of cases there that have been scrapped for parts... But I digress. So, knowing that the total level of expertise on this site dwarfs my own, what do you all think?

Here are those candidates:

Why not just buy a kick ass pc case from silverstone?

You shouldn't need to worry about the PSU too much. Most ATX PSUs are the same dimensions as the ones in the blue & white G3 and graphite G4 cases. Its the later G4s which have different ones. You should be OK with a quicksilver too. The mirror door G4s have much slimmer PSUs in, so an ATX may not fit. But the cases are the same dimensions as the others, so if you're adept at mounting things, you'll have no trouble.

I have a holdout cheap, but good case from Xoxide called the X-Structure if all else fails. I really don't care much for the silverstone designs. If I had an unlimited source of money, I'd get a Lian-Li case, but oh well. I was hoping I might be able to get a mirrored door, but that sounds like trouble. Like I have said before, I'm fairly new to modding and building, so I should go with something easy. I think I'll snag one of those graphites... Any additional input would be wonderful.

If it's a B&W, that would be PERFECT, especially if it doesn't have a zip drive, but it would be JUST FINE if it does. How much do you want for it? I can pay shipping and everything.

I am putting a G3 in a MDD case right now and trust me, it takes a ton of work. But thats what modding is all about. The g3 is a great case to use too. I unfortunatly had to hack some of mine, but I do have most of the parts if you need some. Free if you need em, just pay shipping.

Its a b/w has a psu, and did i mention im in New Zealand, so shipping would be expensive, im not expecting much as it needs some work, has a zipdrive witch is removed but you could find a cover on Ebay or mod it for a 3.5 inch fdd. has a few scraches missing a few bolts (not my fault) has about 2 cracks,

I've seen a few G5 "clone cases" for ATX style PCs on pricewatch.com

I've looked at some clone cases, and none of them really spark my fancy. The one generic case that does is the X-Structure case from Xoxide. And, well... I don't know. I still think it would be so much cooler to build it into a G3 or G4 case. Sorry, MikeMacn... I think I'll pass on that offer. It would probably end up being cheaper to buy a case off of eBay, even though I have no solid confirmation of case state. Pictures reveal some, but not all damages.

Well, I went ahead and bought one of the graphite cases from eBay. $85 including S+H. Does anyone know where to get good prices on 400W power supplies?

eBay?

Personally, I think sticking with a Mac case is a good idea. There's something that you loose when you put a Mac in an ATX case....

Just my two cents. :P

Heres the best places to buy PC parts and sometimes you can find some mac hardware.

pricewatch.com
newegg.com
ebay.com

Even Froogle is a good place at times.

I found a 500W power supply on Xoxide for only $29.99 without S+H. Should I get it?

http://www.xoxide.com/logisys-mesh-500w-psu-blue.html

There's also this one for $19.00 on NewEgg. I know less about it, however, because there is less description on the page. It has a switch, unlike the other, but no power out for a monitor. My current monitor, however, is a 15" LCD Studio Display, however, so I suppose that doesn't matter. I think I should get this one.
