ATI Rage 128 ATIccelerator

ATI Rage 128 ATIccelerator - 10/08/06 09:07 AM

Hey there guys.

I just installed ATIccelerator on my Smurf and have
boosted the GPU up 8,99% on both fronts, and was
wondering what would be the best way to test the
effect of these modifications, since Xbench doesn't
really show any improvements (and it doesn't state
GPU testing on the website :o).

Cheers,
Bert

I would overclock it 15%.  any lower and you won't notice much of a difference.  any higher and you risk killing the gpu and memory.

you have a rev. 1 75mhz or a rev. 2 100mhz rage 128?

How can you tell?
System Profiler and InforMac only tell me
that is has 16Mb of VRAM (and the ROM re-
vision and so forth).

Isn't 15% quite a lot, if you consider that the
Rage 128 doesn't have any heatsink at all.
Well, the B&W's main 120mm fan blows directly
over it, so it won't melt or anything.

I'll give it a shot at +15%, and see if it's worth
the effort. Still, any way to test the GPU's increased
performance?

thx,
Brtz.

do you have a rev.1 or a rev. 2 B&W?

Ooooh!
Now I see.

Hmm... :-$
It lists the RAGE 128 as being 68,99Mhz.
I think (pretty sure) my B&W is a REV. 1.

thats a rev. 1 card for sure.

the rev. 2 B&W G3 is better in several was vs the rev. 1

An Ati 7000 will give you much better performance and you can get them for 20 bucks on ebay.  If you can find a Radeon pci card (no number), it is the best buy for the dough.  You can find it by looking at the heatsink.  It has a fan built in.

Hmmmm...

Thx for the heads-up Maestro. The $20 price
tag will be a little exaggerated I'm afraid, since
I live in Belgium (the capital of Brussels :-p) so
shipping probably will be another $20 or so.
Still beats a 9200 for 190 however...

Is there a really big difference in performance between
the 7000 and the 9200? Because all I'm using
this Smurf for now is Photoshopping, iTunes, Web
Browsing and the occasional iMovie simple edit if
the G5 is taken.
Keeping that in mind, I don't think it will make that
much of a difference, except for the 150 price dif-
ference. :-)

Yes, it can be a bit pricey to ship worldwide.  BUT, I did send a vid card to Austrailia for like 12 bucks.  It took longer, but that comes with the territory.  I would say if you want the best card, go with the ATI Radeon PCI.  It is the second fastest behind the 9200.  I sold one for 39 bucks on eBay so keep your eyes open.  Oh, and they are the rarest PCI Mac card, so it may take some time.  If not, the 7000 will fit the bill too.

this is good advice.  I recently bought a radeon 7000 on ebay for 18.99.  it was a flashed pc version with only vga but it works perfectly.

Hmmm, thanks for the heads-up.

It's a single-display only card 'tough. I would
really like to use another monitor on my Smurf
(and other puters to come), since I am now using
a 17" CRT display, which really is small, even
when using Desktop Manager.
Oh well, my desk is probably too small anyways,
so I'll just stick with the olde display.

I got my 64MB DDR Radeon 7000 PCI pretty cheap on ebay and it has VGA, S-video and DVI.
Despite it's age it is still good for the B&W G3 if one cannot get a Radeon 9200.
If you really need multiple monitors ether hold out for a multi-monitor 7000 or other Radeon or use both a single head Radeon series and Rage 128 together.
Just make sure you put the Radeon in the 66Mhz PCI slot (short one) because a 33Mhz PCI slot can really take down a Radeon... As I found out when swapping my Rev 2 B&W G3 mobo for a Sawtooth mobo. >_<

Wel, thanks or the support guys.
I gots me a RADEON 7000 on eBay
for 56 (pricey, I know) from Germany.
I am now happily ooperating a dual-head
Smurf!
The dual graphics cards do slow eachother down a little,
since they are on the same PCI bus...
Oh well.
Gonna try three-monitor setup in the near future.
Wish me luck!
