Turn and old iBook into a tablet

Turn and old iBook into a tablet - 09/07/07 04:17 PM

I have a aquaintence with an iBook they don't use. Their kid smashed the lcd display after about two months of use and they've let it sit unused instead of getting it fixed or hooking it up to an external monitor. I was thinking about taking it off their hands, but I want to know if there is a way to turn it into a tablet mac that I can use as a digital sketch book? What would be involved in doing this? Supplies, instructions and whatnot. It's not a very old iBook, they got it new last fall, it's low end, but workable.

Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I saw that, but I was thinking of something like this... http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ModBook

The two seem quite similar to me, the main difference being the iTablet is just a touch screen and then ModBook has pressure sensitivity.  You could probably find the proper panel for yours if you want the pressure sensitivity, I think that people have been able to use Wacom tablets that they slip behind the lcd screen - this would involve having a functioning lcd, and then the two are separate pieces.  In that case, the best bet would be to get the lcd from ebay or an apple parts dealer and then the tablet panel from here:

Or you could try to get in touch with the company that made the panel in the iTablet, TrollTouch.  They make touch enabled iBooks currently:

Perhaps you could contact them and see if they would sell you just the panel so you could make a tablet.

good luck with troll touch... i've been trying to talk them into letting me get a touchscreen kit for my 12" ibook for three weeks, they've been absolutely no help, besides, they want about $600 for it.
