would it be at all possible to place a flash-based hard drive (solid state) in a MacBook Pro? I've heard rumors of their speed, is it worth the effort I'd have to go through and money I'd have to pay?

I would only do it if getting the most of your battery is VERY important to you. otherwise its not worth it IMO.

It would increase battery life. Thing is you would have to pay a arm and a leg for a big CF card or a flash drive bigger then 8GB.
