I'll need to solder a USB connection internally, right on to the motherboard.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

It's simple as cake. Buy a cheap-o solder tip and grind it down to a sharp tip. To help things out take some construction paper and cover everything except where you want to solder so it will protect your board from anything bad dripping/spilling etc etc etc...

Since the logicboard will be upside down the pinout for the USB will be backwards.
