Midnight Oil

"Beds Are Burning"
Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty five degrees
The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share
The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

How can we dance
When our earth is turning
How do we sleep
While our beds are burning
How can we dance
When our earth is turning
How do we sleep
While our beds are burning
The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
Now to pay our share

Four wheels scare the cockatoos
From Kintore East to Yuendemu
The western desert lives and breathes
In forty five degrees
The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share
The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

"Beds Are Burning" is a protest song in support of giving native Australian lands back to the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert. These 'last contact' people began moving from the Gibson Desert to settlements and missions in the 1930s.

Pink Floyd Lyrics, Themes & Meanings
~Not so lost for words in the end...~

"Several Species of Small Furry Animals
Gathered Together in a Cave and
Grooving with a Pict"

^klk^
"Aye, an' a bit of mackerel, settler rack and down
Ran it down by the home, and I flew
Well, I slapped me and I flopped it down in the shade
And I cried, cried, cried.

The fear a fallen down had taken, never back to raise
And then cried Mary, an' took out wi' your Claymore,
Right outta a' pocket, I ran down, down the mountainside
Battlin' the fiery horde that was falling around the feet.

Never! He cried, never shall ye get me alive
Ye rotten hound of the burnie crew!
Well, I snatched fer the blade an' a Claymore cut and thrust,
And I fell doon before him round his feet. Aye!

A roar he cried!
Frae the bottom of his heart
That I would nay fall but as dead,
Dead as I can by a' feet, d'ya ken?

And the wind cried Mary.

Thank you."

Which had already been obvious months ago, when the administration began trying to minimize Manafort's significant role in the campaign. The fear, of course, is that Manafort and Flynn testify in exchange for lesser charges or sentences. There is only one bigger fish in the Trump campaign than Manafort, Trump himself.

Trump called the raid "a very, very strong signal, or whatever." Yes it is. It's a very, very strong signal that the Russian story isn't a hoax. That the investigation isn't a "Witch Hunt" and that Trump and the survival of his presidency are in serious legal jeopardy.""

Bees here have become precious

Whenever we took a Hot-Line call from a

At a Texas B&B in July, my wife and I met a couple that live in the outback E of Perth about 60-70 clicks. We sat and talked with them for > 2 hours at breakfast and would have longer but they had things to do. He was a prescription agriculture specialist... yep, I had to ask too! They're developing methods to grow GMO plants in semi-arid conditions - i.e. the outback. Must be doing well- they were here for a month and he was giving a talk at a meeting in St Louis the following week. They flew into LA and then hopped to NYC, rented a car and were driving over as much USA as they could. Guess they wanted to time travel so they came to Texas ! laugh Really nice people, Aus... like you ! grin

Re: change of subject - 09/24/17 05:58 PM

Funny you should mention it...

...AusMac (a.k.a Treebeard) is quite the expert
on growing food (& much more) in arid conditions.

I've known Peter long enough to have seen photos of
virtually every property he's occupied since birth..
ALL of them are remarkable by being an oasis amidst
nearly dessert surroundings.

Peter was influenced by his mum that worked hard at
planting native trees & shrubs everywhere she lived.

Peter's property is remarkable in that you can actually
see it from space on Google Earth... virtually the only
patch of green (other than neighbours with mown Lawns..
..WATER HOGS..) in the vicinity.

All the animals, from the bees, breaded dragon lizards,
& varieties of colourful parrots & gallahs, $ snakes,
to the hawks (the top predators in Peter's Paradise)
all live in concert on the small patch of land created
FROM THE GROUND UP by laboriously dragging home the
discarded waste from wineries & gardens for kilometers
around, turned into compost & mulch (to feed the soil
and conserve water) planting trees as wind breaks, and
renewable source of fire wood.......

...you know the story...
It's the science behind How-To Turn Around A DUSTBOWL.

Anyway... Peter's Paradise is a living testament that
IT CAN BE DONE...
'HOW-TO Create Your VERY OWN ECO-SYSTEM'
...For Fun & Profit. smile

So he shares his bounty with the native animals from
tree fruits & nuts to nectaring insects, spiders & birds he
delights in photographing have come to populate his gardens.

I've said many times (not sure if he gets the reference)
"BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME"

sorry Aus.. I know how you hate for me to brag on you,
but you really should Stop Hiding Your Lamp Under A Bushel

Tornado Rips Through Pulaski County
By: Ryan Tate

(Grand Chain, IL)--One person is dead and five injured as a tornado rips through the Pulaski County.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department, Steve Kohn was killed while protecting his son in his basement. Kohn was a computer science professor at Cairo High School and chief negotiator for the teacher's union.

Most of damage was along Tick Ridge Road, with trees uprooted, homes destroyed and debris covering county roads.

Rescue personnel and volunteers continue searching for the injured, but according to a deputy with the sheriff's department, everyone in the area is accounted for.

One wiped out our Dollar Tree and a local sporting goods business.

One had a wide swath and took out a bunch of homes in Lindale and just N of us.

I lived outside of Dallas for a while during the '60's.
I was curious about what appeared to be cellar doors
out in the backyard but not attached to the house(?)

When I asked the little girl who lived there about it
she kinda' cocked her head sideways and looked at me
like "ignorant Yankee" and said matter-of-factly;
"Why That's the TOR-NA-DO SHELTER." smirk

FREAKED ME RIGHT OUT! eek

Time for THIS FREAK To Get-The-Freak Outta' Here!" shocked

Since then we had one in 'Jersey (RARITY)
unbenownst to me, it just happened to have struck along
the exact route between my apartment & where I had to drive
to pick up Ted, so I got to see the damage up-close & personal.

Down a grassy hill used by kids to sled down in Winter,
Hit the wall to the raised overpass of Rt21 toward Newark,
hopped the highway (and the Passaic River) and landed in the
river-side park on the far shore, crossed the main street
and tore the roof off the biggest car dealership in the area.

Seeing the swath of lawn as neatly removed as if by a
road scraper, and 50 year old willows in the park twisted
and splintered to kindling freaked me out... weird to see
the roof peeled back, and none of the cars damaged...
.....actually, it was a real gut-shot.. nearly lost my lunch!

It is a sad thing that very few seem to have noticed the passing of such a venerable musician and songwriter as Ray Thomas from the Moody Blues. He was a veteran cosmic rocker.

I'd heard nothing about it

Interesting that she who came in through the bathroom window, was actually into Ray Thomas' bedroom. The Beatles later used that line as the famous song.

Well I do have gigs have to try and use up in a few days. So here is the Moodies, sometime in the future. A compilation by a fan who knew fans who indeed found a lot of songs I'd never heard.

Queensland was once a part of north America.

I couldn't locate the exact article right now, but
I'd read a similar conjecture a few years back
wherein geologists were comparing ZIRCONS
(The oldest known mineral yet found on Earth)

Quote:
There are several places, one is Australia. Jack Hills, Australia, where rocks were found to contain the oldest known minerals on Earth, a 4.4 billion-year-old zircon. Just three of the very oldest zircons have been found, ones that date back to almost 4.4 billion years ago. http://www.livescience.com/43584-earth-oldest-rock-jack-hills-zircon.html The Acasta Gneiss from northern Canada is around 4 billion years old. http://paleobiology.si.edu/geotime/main/hadean4.html

Re: change of subject - 01/20/18 04:05 AM

Not the link. The zircons in WA were there 3 billion years before a bit of Alaska got stuck to Australia and ripped off from North America. About 1.4 billion years ago.

Not at all an insignificant find. Particularly the fact that Aboriginal people were grinding axes more than twenty thousand years before anyone else.

The reason is that there is very little flint in Australia and it is on the other end of Australia. They had to grind axes.

1. Doublespeak: A Weapon Aimed at the Language

Doublespeak is not language. It is anti-language.
The purpose of language is to transfer a truth from one mind to another;
the purpose of doublespeak is to transfer a falsehood disguised as a truth.

...We've come a long way from "See Dick run." smirk

2. Multitasking Is No Problem,
But Double Talk Overwhelms Us

Humans can learn "sequential structure from multiple sources at the same time, as
long as the sensory characteristics of the sources do not overlap," Christiansen said.

IOW, We can listen to a car radio and drive while keeping an eye on changing
traffic conditions -- separate complex tasks completed without much trouble.
But if two people are talking to us at the same time, our perceptual frequencies
get jammed, says a new study.

wot brought this to mind was a running joke between me n Ted

I'd created several shortcut replies useful while driving:
"Mr" = Message Received
"omw" = On My Way
"eta" + 10-15 etc.
"yml" = Yeth, My Love: watch the carton... you'll get it.

"The Henpecked Duck"

starring Daffy Duck (1941-Warner Bros)

useful for replying to such as
Pick up bread on the way home
or
Make sure to latch the door so it don't BaNg all night

...just make sure the peep on
the receiving end has a sensaumma wink

eek Weather's Gone Off the Rails! eek

Yes you read that right, Blizzard Conditions!
Destructive winds & extremely low temperatures have lashed
parts of Australia's south-east as a deep polar low moves across
the region, according to reports it has caused flights to be cancelled.

Blizzards and bushfires.
It may not come as a surprise, but the icy weather across NSW on Saturday and Sunday broke temperature records.

Some 60 bushfires continue to burn across the state, including north of Crescent Head on the north coast, but the threat to homes has eased.

NOW THAT'S SKILL!

What else could you call it
when a player catches the ball on the fly..
while being attacked from all sides by the opposing team,
turns his Back To THE GOAL POSTS and Kicks the Ball with both feet
off the ground, back over his head and between the 2 Up-Rights for a GOAL!

loik to see that accomplished in the NFL grin
