Born Before 1954?? - 05/24/14 09:06 AM

If you were born before 1954, you were born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen food, plastic, contact lenses, frisbees ...radar...credit cards, split atoms, laser beams and ball point pens. even before pantyhose, dishwashers, clothes
dryers, electric blankets, and air conditioners, drip dry clothes and before man walked on the moon.

Rabbits were not Volkswagons, before computer dating, dual careers ..never heard of FM radio, tape decks, yogurt, a chip was a piece of wood. Pizza and McDonald's, instant coffee were all unheard of, for a nickle you could mail one letter and two postcards or make a phone call, buy a Pepsi, ride the city bus.

11 cent a gallon gasoline..a good Chevy coupe was $600, grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink ...oh well we survived.

I was born early in '49
every once in a while I think about having first
learnt to write seated at a wooden desk with a
functioning INKWELL using a metal nibbed pen
and what an innovation "BALL POINTS" were..
..w/their sticky leaky cloggy blue ink tongue

...and what a relief it was to be able to
wear nylons WITHOUT a Girdle w/clips
to hold them up... blush

I remember getting a Polio Vacine in school
in fact the entire community turned out to
participate! (obviously back before any
"OBAMA-CARE-SCARE Socialist Gov TAKE-OVER"
when sensible folk feared a crippling disease
even more than their own President. smirk

I still remember sitting on my Dad's lap steering his '53 Studebaker down our street. I supposed if I'd driven us into a telephone pole (yep, no buried lines then, either), I'd have been the first air bag! eek And we were the first in our neighborhood to get colored fire! cool

Re: Born Before 1954?? - 05/24/14 11:36 AM

I remember vaguely having working horses on our farm. To me, they were big and scary. These were draft horses. My biggest memory would be when I was about 7 or so. We were working down at my grandfathers place about a quarter mile south from ours. They were done for the day, so dad told me to take the team back north to our barn. Man, I didn't want to do that as I didn't know much how to drive them.

Not to worry, as the team knew exactly where to go. My biggest problem was keeping hold of the reins and keeping up with them as the hurried home. You see, their double tree harness wasn't hooked to any wagon or such. I had to run behind them . But they went right into the stable. I was breathless and frightened to death.

Great stuff, but near the end it said, "grass was mowed"

What do people do instead of mowing grass these days?

I think he meant most people mowed their own lawns. Today most hire a landscaper. Or maybe he meant everyone had goats? whistle

I remember freaking out when I'd tested positive
for that tuberculosis tine test.
Turns out that what it indicated was that I'd
BEEN EXPOSED To TB... no mystery when I thought
about it afterward... one of my playmates had been
cured of TB, and apparently, it was enough to show
up when I was tested.. and every time since then.

"grass was mowed = not smoked"

Ah, I really didn't get that. Of course, by the time I was around, it was pot and the word grass already sounded dated. smile

Couple of inaccuracies… not being picky… just for the record….

#1 we did have air conditioning… it was evaporative AC at least in TX. Yes not your traditional coolant AC… but evaporative made the heat bearable.

#2: penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1929 but was not commercially available.. Florey and Chain developed a method to grow the mold in broth in 1939 (before had to be grown only on a surface). Broth culture made mass production possible. All 3 shared the 1952 Nobel Prize for their efforts. Penicillin became commercially available in 1942-43 but was reserved for only the troops in WWII due to limited production. After the war, it was commercially available for many Drs. but I'm sure some may not have had access.

#3 I thought the British developed the first practical radar in WWII ? is that accurate ?

#4 they HAD dishwashers before 1954… earlier models were called "husbands"… later models were mechanical !! wink

that is all !! laugh

accept in MY Case. frown
Myself being the dishwasher.

...and they still use the Evaporative ACs in AU
where it's so-o-o-o freakin' DRY!
t'would be counter productive HERE (in the north East
where the heat is insufferable due to HIGH Humidity)

Re: Born Before 1954?? - 05/25/14 03:14 PM

yeah I still do the dishes by hand too..of course I only have one glass plate, one place setting of silver ware, and one cup..oh and one frying pan and a small pot.

I do run across an evaporator A/C unit for cars every once in a while....clipped to the passenger front window, fill with ice...not dry ice...and it worked just fine, here was a model that sat over the transmission hump, with a fan to force the air around..it worked too.

Over here I have yet to meet a Japanese person who wasn't quite well off who had a clothes dryer. Everybody still hangs out the wash everyday. It is largely a space issue.

There are dealers who sell reproductions for antique car builders, simple to use, a round shell, clips over a closed window, fill the shell with ice, or water. the better ones have a fan to help move the air around inside the car. the ones that fit inside the car use the same technology, and of course there are the water bags that people in desert areas use top hang on the front of the car near the radiator. have to use water ice, dry ice will replace air with co2 and put you out when all the breathable air is gone. http://www.treehugger.com/corporate-resp...-mcfarland.html

Just thinking that when I was a lad my mother wrote checks signed as. "Mrs. George Be*****" instead of her first name. How many married women do that now?
