KNOW Before You GO - 12/04/13 03:18 PM

"ANYBODY HERE FROM 'JERSEY?"
"Yeah.. I'm from New Jersey."
"Oh yeah? What Exit?" >rim-shot<

Here in the GUARD RAIL STATE (the Garden State)
we 'get the joke'. smirk

For the 3rd SMALLEST State in the Union
New Jersey has More Highways than any other state.
..virtually Every Town (no matter how small) is
connected to every other by some highway or another
making it a cinch to pin-point virtually any location
using a Highway # & Exit, including your own house.

Long way 'round the barn just to say, 5 days a week
twice a day, I drive Ted to work, about 25 miles
each way (A HUNDRED MILES A DAY frown ) and all of
them MAJOR Roadways from between 6 & 12 lanes
of HIGH SPEED Traffic (often bumper to bumper @
60MPH (or worse still bumper to bumper @ a dead
standstill frown ) I take the GSP, US46, US20, & I80
going and coming and each highway intersects
several others (Lots of entrances & exits.. lots of
POTENTIAL accidents waiting to happen... any of
which can turn the a highway into a parking lot
in a matter of minutes.)

So one morning I'm wingin' past the local State
Trooper Baracks and I spot their new Over-Road
LED Display with the message:
"511 KNOW Before You Go"

IT'S A FREAKIN' GOD-SEND! cry

~@~ ~@~ ~@~ ~@~ ~@~ ~@~

In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 511 as the national travel information telephone number. As of October 31, 2009 there were forty-one 511 services available to the traveling public operating in 35 states, two Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory. This translates into 511 services being available to over 166 million Americans and almost 7 million Canadians.

Yeah...
...and WINTER hasn't even set-in ...so far. eek

That's why I figured I'd share the 511 Link
with anyone in the same situation I'm in...

There's no way to stop the aggressive driving
behavior during morning & evening rush hours,
After all "S_IT HAPPENS" moment by moment,
but it still helps to see which roads to avoid in
advance when at all possible.

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 11:39 AM

I have map dyslexia. Cannot read them. I also do not understand North, South, East, West type of directions. Just tell me about the landmarks (Micky D's, Wawa's, hospital, CVS, etc.). blush

I hate circles. I will drive 100 miles out of the way to avoid them.
Thank the Lord I memorized all the back roads in 2 counties.
My favorite back road to avoid traffic & circles is driving through miles of corn fields to get to the navy base with never a flat tire. whistle

I can't recall where you're located...
...however,I thought NJ was the only state still
using "Circles" to route traffic...?

You're not the only one that finds them a devil to
negotiate. There are even diagrams that may help.

__________

I'm slightly dyslexic... mainly DIRECTIONALLY frown
I know North from South, but I couldn't point
RIGHT or LEFT with a gun pointed to my head! crazy

Funny how that shyte slipped by our Grade School
teachers way-back-when we were growing up frown

I ALWAYS hesitate long enough to remember which
hand I write with... sometimes you don't have the
luxury of that 1/2 second hesitation while speeding
down a crowded hiway following someone's directions.

Our wonderfully regressive PENNDOT has decided that the way to solve the traffic problems on Rt. 222 north of Reading is by installing two circles at two major intersections. Idiots.

What doesn't everybody like about circles/roundabouts? Plenty of studies show that they do what they were meant to do, keep you from having to wait at lights, and they ease congestion.

"having 40% fewer vehicle collisions, 80% fewer injuries and 90% fewer serious injuries and fatalities (according to a study of a sampling of roundabouts in the United States, when compared with the junctions they replaced)"

Bunch of old fuddy duddys. smirk

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 01:52 PM

You've never been in the traffic circle up in North Cambridge, MA, where Rte. 2 comes down from limited access to city street and intersects immediately with Alewife Brook Parkway. It was sooooo bad that the state decided to get rid of it and put in some modern stop lights.

I'm sure that there are exceptions, but most of them work as advertised.

Yeah,
There's one in Clark like what you described.
I've been doing circles all my life and
that one's the worst I've ever seen
WOT A PItA! cry

I DO have it bookmarked

I was merely being considerate of others.

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 02:55 PM

ANYWAY

The neatest thing I've discovered in that 511
link is Their "CAMERAS" Option

Select The Type of Highway
(The most dangerous stretch is Interstate 80)
SO I select "Interstates" and 80 pops up,
then I FLICK to which Highway Intersection I
want to SEE along the route and BADA~BING!

I'm watching An Actual CAMERA SHOT of The Traffic
within a fraction of a second Right On my iPhone! grin

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 05:17 PM

Celandine, I live in South Joisey - Camden Co.
A few years ago, the state got rid of the Ellisburg Circle & put up stop lights.
Last year, the Marlton Circle was completely dismantled (5 yr project which put a lot of businesses out of business) & put up traffic lights. The other day, I went through there & got lost! blush I didn't know the circle has now what they call 5 way traffic lights. Damn circle has turned into 5 corners (hexicon?) with 5 traffic signals. I can't drive & read directional signs at the same time, so I kept straight when I should have made a left at one of the traffic lights. Will be avoiding that hexicon thingy from now on. Glad the back road is still there.

Berlin Circle is still around.

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 06:25 PM

It's EASY, Nana !!

North is always UP,
South is always DOWN,
West is always to your LEFT
and East is always to your RIGHT

remember that when you're driving and you'll be fine ! whistle

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/09/13 07:47 PM

.

Your directions are interesting, Dave, and brought up another one to me just now. Another place to go, or to have visited, from my home town of Millville, S Joisey, was "down below."

The farther south you went, or "below" our city, the closer you got to smaller towns, usually fishing, clamming, crabbing, oystering, etc. related communities. They had less money and the things of comfort that more northern cities had because of the jobs held by northern people in factories, etc.

My memory is not clear on just which cities a person referred to when he went down below. Just thought that was interesting.

My father spent a lot of time "going down the road a piece." That's what he always told us kids.

Re: KNOW Before You GO - 12/10/13 10:28 AM

Kate, being from Philly, downtown was the sprawling Center City with all the stores & what not.

When my family moved to So. Joisey, there was no downtown. There was only uptown which consisted of a 1 block street=Main St. This street had a Movie house (not a theater), a pharmacy, 5 & 10 and a hardware store. Talk about culture shock. mad
My WTF moment was my first day of school. I went by school bus, while 95% of the kids rode their horses.

I remember when 295 was a 4 leaf clover circle!!!!! shocked
