If you are of middle age or so. Get checked for colorectal cancer

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-5761...ncer-screening/

Talk with your doctor. The colonoscopy is nothing. ( the prep is not much fun) but It can save your life. And havin cancer is no fun at all. Trust me.

They took out twelve inches of my colon along wit some of my rectum. Evidently this is the part that indicates to normal folks that they will need to schedule a bathroom break sometime. For me, I don't get this indication that allows me to do this scheduling . One minute I'm feeling fine and literally in 30 seconds I have to get to a restroom. Not fun living ones daily life around close proximity of a restroom. Going to a sporting event is iffy. Even a mall.

Every place I go, I have to consider what I might have to do.

But, I'm alive. And I'm grateful . After they found cancer in my liver the doctor gave me 33% chance of making it.

So get that checkup. Get it soon.
If you smoke. Stop.

Of course I've never smoked but still got cancer. Although a lot of folks probably I still blow smoke out my arse.

I needed a endoscopy when I was about 44 and my doc said they normally wait till 50 to do the colonoscopy but since I was already going to be knocked out and on the table....

I tell the joke that they went in both ends and met in the middle and had a party!

Also tell the joke that I hope they didn't use the same device for both ends....

Anyways... I was clean except for a coupla bumps he wouldn't even classify as nodes, but he clipped them anyway.

And I smoked for 30 years... but finally quit 4 years, 2 months and 1 day ago.

It also appears that my little joke below about autocorrect is finally appropriate for the conversation at hand. grin

I have had an endoscopy twice. Both since 40. My sister had one and they told her that any siblings should probably get checked out too because she had some polyps. I checked out fine. I had one tiny polyp.

I agree, the endoscope isn't much, but the prep is not much fun.

Already had a colonoscopy a few years ago. Get a yearly physical (helps reduce our cost of insurance) and quit smoking back in 2000

+1

It also helps to
Know Your Family Health History

My mom was the 1st in her family
going back generations THAT DIDN'T DIE
Of Colorectal Cancer...because I forced her
to go get tested at the first sign of trouble.

She went through the same thing as MrB
but we had her with us for another 20 YEARS!

Armed with that knowledge, I underwent the
same procedure, and was luckier still... since I'd
elected to get checked out BEFORE any signs of
any problems.... but was still too late to escape
unscathed. frown IF I'd had the smarts to have been
routinely examined every few years.........

'Nother Old Southern Saying:
"IF a BullFrog had Wings he
wouldn't bUmP his butt so much." wink

Yeah.... Get checked out
beats the hell outta' the alternative!

Ah... thinking about it...
I HAD HAD The Smarts sooner than later...
...I'd indeed gone through the dreaded "prep"
and even the scoping... I remember now..
..because I remember asking the doctor & his
assistant if they could please turn the display
so that I too could see what they were seeing smile

The doctor said, "Sure... why not?" smile

Here's where it went all pear-shaped...

I was told to return a week later to get the report..
...but during that time, MY INSURANCE WAS DROPPED
and being disabled, I couldn't afford any other
coverage... For The NEXT 8 YEARS!
UNBELIEVABLE! The Test Was Already DONE
But they Refused to give me the results of the test!

Fast-Forward to 2 1/2 years ago ...
...and the above post... when I made a conscious
CHOICE to go for a retest, and by that time, what
was probably an "Insignificant BUMP" years before
had developed into what was described as a,
"Massive, Attached, Bleeding Adenoma"

Again... had I NOT elected to get MYSELF Re-Tested
everything I've been through over the last almost
3 years could have been even worse...

Glad you made it Dave !!
My mom died of colon C and so I have to get a colonoscopy every 5 years or so. She smoked too which I blame for the outcome. Plus she didn't have a regular colonoscopy. One good thing of ACA is it provides for PREVENTATIVE check ups! DUH !! shocked

Had 2 and so far not even 1 single polyp! Course the hemorrhoids ran them off ! grin

Had mine nearly 3 years ago. I was so "clean" that I don't have to have another for another 4 years. smile

SERIOUSLY!

People should be made more aware
that this is one of the CURABLE Cancers
as long as you detect and treat it EARLY.

The dreaded "prep" (the worst part of it)
is the PitA FASTING ... going off solid food
for a day.. and drinking large glasses of
clear fluid until you're SQUEEKEY CLEAN! crazy

The Scoping itself is painless...and watching
over the doctor's shoulder is A TRIP! crazy

During my procedure, I was out. Didn't know a thing. But being a photographer, I asked for and received pictures. I offered to show them to my family, but my brother said he had seen enough A**holes

Oh my last one came out squeaky clean also

I understand most men opt to sleep through the procedure,
I imagine it's easier all the way around, since the big
difference is all comes down to managing to stay RELAXED.

The more relaxed the better as far as the doctor's concerned. crazy

Woman generally have an easier time relaxing, being that
we're by and large more used to being poked and prodded.

(I can hardly wait to read what DLC is going to do with that
last sentence... I seem to have left myself wide-open... blush )

Re: Please. Get checked out. - 11/06/13 02:34 PM

Ironic that men seem to get put out for the procedure. An endoscope down the throat is a far more uncomfortable procedure because of the gag reflex. In Japan they don't put you out for either, they just give you something to relax you a bit, and then only if you ask for it.

Good info and all, although all of our doctors have filled us in I'm sure. We all seem up to speed, but this has evolved into the TMI thread IMO. smirk
