.

Ha

The people that live in the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. are called "Yoopers" and are proud of it. The people that live under the bridge are called "trolls." The song "I'm a Troll Man" was written about them. Lots of trolls from down below dream about moving to da U.P., but there's no work here. So we let them come up to relax, enjoy and spend their cash, but they gotta go home afterwards.

One of the best things to come out of U.P. is a musical group called oddly enough da Yoopers, great stuff to play when you are a dj that just ran out of stuff to play.

John R. - Yes, good for jokes, not so good for the rate of alcoholism, which has been quoted to me at about 5% of the population. Not sure of the accuracy of that.

Kate - The best synopsis of Yoopers I've seen - and largely true. BTW, the "bridge" is the Mackinac Bridge.

MrB - Haha!

Pirate - Da Yoopers have had some great songs - you picked my favorite, but I also like Smelting U.S.A.. I also like their store in West Ishpeming, "Da Yoopers Tourist Trap,"

DLC - I think I understand, but some of us prefer it cold.

drjohn - I use that picture as a desktop! Also, I don't expect to ever go to deer camp because that song is pretty accurate.

I was looking at working at NMU about 8 years ago. I was just up there this summer. One they you notice is there are lots of porches higher than normal...guessing it is due to the snow!

Here is a great link for some daily UP photos

The snow "thermometer" is up in Keweenaw County, north of Mohawk. It's a real shocker to see how much snow can fall in a season. Of course, it compresses, melts, and sublimates, so the only places it gets really deep are in untraveled hollows.

You have to be ready for six months of winter to live up here.

My wife looks at the pasty cam almost daily. She's from up that way.

Here was the 4th of July on my trip over...the bridge is a bit "fun" on a motorcycle! Not too balmy!

I don't like crossing it in a car, either. Those little metal bars they call "curbs" look like nice launching ramps.

Not too bad if the wind is under 15 mph.
