Ack - Record issues! - 09/22/13 07:33 PM

I just acquired this record from my grandpa, and it's scratched! No! It's screwed, isn't it?

A bad scratch certainly.

'Tis. I am especially devastated because it's been in my family since my dad was a baby. I wish there was something I could do for it.

That is one nasty scratch, back in the day when I was a disc jocky at a radio station we use to put quarters on the tone arm, looks like you tried that, you might find a replacement disc at a vintage record shop, a lot of record collectors are not after the disc anyway, they want the cover art. I heard of some computer software that might help too

If you're worried about keeping the vinyl intact, playing it with that coin taped on is the worst thing you can do though, it will destroy them.

Well the tracking weight is way too light on my turntable without it. it just skids across the grooves.

Jim's right about placing too much weight
on the arm/needle/grooves wrecks the record.

SOME** models had an Adjustment Screw located
on the far-end of the arm to tweak the balance.

** the higher end models

Nuke, I've heard worse ideas. Price is pretty reasonable too.

I think the cool factor could still be there if you bought a replacement vinyl, because as has been pointed out, a lot of people are more interested in the jackets and artwork, and that's probably what anybody in your family spent the most time looking at and handling.

Guess the nostalgia is lost with mp3s eh? Imagine handing them down? Something missing there.

I might have to do that... but not anytime soon, I've got no money at the moment.

I'm uploading a playthrough of the whole song without the penny on the tonearm btw.

Yeah, the dynamic range of vinyl/analog reproduction vs compressed digital.

The wiki page on vinyl myth is pretty good, but it doesn't cover harmonics which is lacking in digital reproduction due to compression.

While there's a lot to be said about vinyl fidelity
there's a lot more to be said about 40,000 songs
in your pocket.

While I miss a bunch of old stuff that never got
reissued on CD & .mp3, I'm glad at never having to
make myself crazy buying needle cartridges or being
anal retentive about handling and preserving vinyl.

Yard sales...flea markets...even radio stations getting rid of unwanted vinyl...most of the time for little to nothing..used yard sale record worth about a buck. problem with radio station copies is that back in the day we use to back cue the records so there will be cue burn on the first few seconds of the cut...yard sale and flea market finds may have bad scratches but for a buck it is worth trying
