Dead Link

But I get your point from it's URL

and as a renter (both house & phone)

You're right... it's tossing money out an open window
but wrong as both have certain advantages as well

I was asked by a good friend how I can survive in this day and age without a cell phone.
Easy. The same way I've always survived without a cell phone.
Believe me, I would love to have an iPhone, but an iPod touch fits my needs just fine, thank you.

The more disabled i become
the more I come to rely on my iPhone.

Annoying little stuff like running out of gas
would be a major disaster for me, most service
stations around me are closing down, so just
locating one in a pinch, (without driving in
circles ((running out of gas))looking for one)

I've already told the story of sitting outside
the Main Post office in town...an impressive
structure, big wide marble/granite? stairway,
tall Dorian columns ...
with a little tiny gold-leaf sign indicating
their HOURS of Business @ the top of the stairs

frown

(couldn't go anywhere else...
...THEY were holding an undelivered package
for me...

9AM ... issue, if I climb the stairs, I might
have to sit at the top (can't stand for an hour)
waiting for them to open ((at 10AM ..?)) or
clammer back to the car AND GO HOME... since I
couldn't possibly climb the stairs AGAIN all
in the same day...
...OR...
Use my Smart Phone to GOOGLE Post Office Hours.

BINGO... 10AM... but at least I was able to sit
in the relative comfort of my car until then.

I could site other reasons/examples...

...Being at a Mall...
I can no longer spend the day window shopping etc
I have to get where I'm going ASAP or not go at all.

BINGO!

GOOGLE/Livingston Mall/FLOOR PLAN/Apple Store wink
floorplan in hand, I could then choose the closest
entrance /parking spot to have any hopes of
getting in and out again.. and still be able to
drive home.

Don't get me wrong, a cell phone is a necessity these days.
My time is coming, but I will buy the cheapest non-smart phone I can find.

My 8GB iPhone 3Gs was $19.99

it's the GD CONTRACT/SERVER that'll kill ya'!

I'm planning on upgrading to the 16GB iPhone 4Gs
which is still only $49.99 if you get a Refurb.

however what you need to do is to familiarize
yourself with TERMS that you'll encounter before
hand, so when the merchant babbles off contract
options (like a freakin' cross between a used-car-
salesman & an auctioneer eek ) you'll be better
prepared to know exactly what you want & need
in order To Not Be "OVER-SOLD" on Potentially
(NOT "nickel n' dime") EXPENSIVE "Add-Ons".

Yep. Yep. Yep.
That's why I don't understand the "cheap" iPhone rumors.
It's not the cost of the device, it's the monthly plan that kills me.

My Uncles cell phone is $20 every 3 months.

Yup

and it's Not just an iPhone
I was paying about $150 per month
using a "FREE" Nokia PoS through AT&T

...and it's Not just The Contract...
I'm past my contract period
and still paying the same outrageous rates
AND getting SPAMMED by AT&T to renew a NEW
2 Year Contract (with the CHEAP NEW iPHONE
as a Tempting Carrot-On-A-Stick Enticement)

I've been with A&T since Lilith seduced Adam. I only pay a little over $15/month plus taxes for my land line. I am on their senior plan w/all the bells & whistles.
I have no use for a cell phone. If you want to contact me if I am not home, leave a message on my answering machine. If you leave no message, as far as I am concerned you never called. smirk

There is no advantage for me to have a cell phone. Survived without one for over 1/2 century plus. Can survive without one for another century. That is, if they are still making them. laugh My mama always said, "you don't miss what you never had." She sure is right! Well sort of.....I'm lost without my computers. whistle

Getting a non-smart phone may be an exercise in futility.

I use a non smart phone...an 8 dollar Samsung from Dollar General, thru TracPhone...with double minutes so $20 gets me 120 minutes, I just refill it when ever...so far cost is only 80 bucks a year with no hassles if It blow up I will just get another 8 dollar phone that even comes with accessories like a car charger

Re: So glad I've never purchased a cell phone - 07/25/13 10:11 PM

I had three cell phones befoe I go my iPhone 4. I don't speak cellphoneese. I ve had a computer since 1978 but can't navigate the menus of cell phones my meth brained son had to set them up for me.
I had the trackhone last but upgrading minutes from their online was about like using the damn thing itself.

Theni got my iPhone. It was like a breath of fresh air. Set up was a snap. Mostly the same as my iPad. And the menus make sense. The sound quality is great. Even with out my hearing aids.

I'm tempted by the ads for a new phone but I use it mostly for phoning. If I want to use the Internet I use my iPad which I have with me most all the time. Most of the new attributes of the new model are for non phone uses.

As for needing a cell, I have it with me all the time. I am so used to that now. In the past I would take two week trips over the country by myself with out telling anyone. Completely disconnected. I never thought anything of it. Now it's so nice to do what you have done at the post office.
