No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/19/13 04:43 PM

From a new report:

Actor James Gandolfini died suddenly in Italy after a suspected heart attack. He was 51. Gandolfini will be forever known for his portrayal of mob boss Tony Soprano on the seminal HBO series The Sopranos, which won him three Emmy Awards. He remained in business with the pay cable network and was in pre-production on a new limited series, Criminal Justice, one of several projects he had in the works.

please excuse the gallows humor
someone was bound to say it...
...might as well be me.

in all seriousness...
I liked James Gangolfini quite a lot.
I've seen him other roles that showcased
his talents far beyond the mob role that
ultimately went on to define him. frown

I read that in real life he was a peach!

RIP Tony frown

Aw Man. That just sucks!

Love him in the Sopranos.

I think it might be the best series on TV. Ever.

I've watched the entire series, maybe, five times. Am watching it now on HBO.

He payed that role to perfection. One second, he can be the most jovial guy on earth, and the next, he can be the most evil SOB.

This is going to take a while for me to digest. Such a young man, too

Christophers on-screen prediction that Tony would be dead at 50 from eating... some great acting in this scene.

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/20/13 06:22 AM

Logical progression, Tony's son would take his spot as the head of the family in any future shows...back story Tony retires and moves to AZ.

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/20/13 06:44 AM

Possible.. remember thinking about that and then thinking they would have to recast AJ. I don't the AJ actor had the chops to do the role justice.

Maybe time will improve his chances.

Just last week I ripped most of the my series DVDs so I can play them on my old PowerBook while I am on the treadmill. Come to find out, he was just one year older than me so that will probably be on my mind for awhile as I jog away.

BTW, the episodes are almost a full hour which is perfect if you need 60 minutes of a diversion.

I turned 51 last month... smile

I have the first 4 or 5 seasons on DVD that I ripped from..? I don't remember where.

The reason Tony & Christie are inseparable in my mind
is because I'm intimately acquainted with every un-filled eek
pot-hole along that drive from the Holland Tunnel to
Essex Fells. The Belleville Turnpike is still located a block
from where I presently live, to the short cut I take via
Bloomfield Ave. through Essex Fells to the Master-
Gardener's HQ in Roseland where I do my volunteer work.

Wot ken I say? Those "NO-SHOW" Jobs are amusing, until
you gotta' live with them. smirk NJ infastructure has gone

planning his GOP US Run, based upon his ability to
"BALANCE THE BUDGET" with his meat-cleaver cuts.

Same here. I haven't seen it either, till now.

I just watched the first 2 episodes. I missed the first couple of years, and never wanted to join mid series.

It's got me really interested, from just the pilot and EP 2.

I'm a Sopranos virgin. Just think of all the cool stuff I have yet to experience those of you that have seen it all. grin

The series covered a lot of issues, from family life to Gay issues to conflicts between races.

I watch it regularly. I probably have seen each episode four times. Never get tired of it.

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/21/13 08:16 PM

I think my favorite characters were Paulie Walnuts and Tony. My least favorite is Anthony Junior ( A.J.) and Tony's sister, Janice.

A.J. Was such a wimp. Such a brat. They should have put him down. Janice was just despicable. What a witch.

But Tony had many levels, but basically he was pure sociopath. He would do anything if he thought it would benefit him alone. And did. Like when he killed Christopher.

I loved how they portrayed the mob bosses wife, Carmela.

Actually, I've always liked Charmaine Bucco, Artie's wife. She is the only regular cast member who refused to be corrupted by Tony or kiss up to Carmella

Good example why A.J. Is such a lame character.

Just before this he was giving his mother a crappy time for asking him to help her

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/22/13 06:18 AM

That was the idea... to show AJ as a spoiled lil rich kid.
Remember when he was failing at grades and wouldn't be able to make the colleges they wanted for him... Tony goes out and buys him a new Truck and then says you better get your grades up. The same episode where he went to NY and then to a party instead of sleeping at Meadows.. the one where he also said F U to his Mom. He was spoiled.

But he also had the mean streak of his father.

Paulie Walnuts scare/disturbs me the most. I find him a cold cookie and highly unpredictable.

I'm not nutz over either of his kids, His sister, Janice reminds me of mine (...sister, 'Janice' eek )
It's their mother Livia who I find more than a little "unhinged".

Tony's smart, and calculating.
IMO I recognize the same trait in our governor. smirk

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/22/13 09:30 AM

Carmela was complex. When she wanted the divorce, went to the black counselor, who told her to just take the children and walk away and leave the life style and money. She couldn't do it. She wanted the money and position that Tony gave her but didn't want him.

She loved being the top wife.

When AJ had Devon over and she mentioned how much the statue cost. At first wouldn't tell but in same breath bragged it cost $3000.

AJ with that pseudo concern about his being so rich and so many others note having much. Then just after that his friend and him going over to Devon's to discover what it is to be really rich, with Picasso's hanging all over the walls. Discovering he is still just a Shiite .

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/22/13 09:39 AM

Oh, that's the intent. I still didnt like his character. A product of how he was raised with parents that fixed every scrap he got into. Or just the fact of who he was.

Like the time he was to have the fight after school over a shirt that was torn during a previous scrap in school. The boy came to the fight with the money. AJ thought it was because of how tough he was but another friend said it certainly wasn't because of him but who his dad was.

So he had both issues working against him. Being somewhat rich and having a mob boss as father.

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/22/13 09:50 AM

Tony's mother, Livia. The more I watched the series the more I understood her. They had her cast perfectly. And Marchand played her superbly. Not over done. So well, it has taken me several viewings to understand her.

Like the situation, where she was in the hospital and wanted Janice to take her home so she mentioned to her she might have money hidden. Then the ways she manipulated Junior.

I also haven't decided if junior and her didn't have a sexual component in their relationship.

And, Janice , her daughter in the way she used Bobby became a lot like her.

Also liked how when Janice had shown some progress in controlling her anger, that Tony couldn't have that so he knew which buttons to push to throw her off the wagon.

Re: No Hope for New Sopranos Movie - 06/22/13 09:56 AM

During the whole series we never knew much about Tonys younger sister . Barbara . She and her family seemed normal, though Tony had helped their business in the early years by greasing some wheels.

How did she come out of that same family with psychotic mother and brutish father in addition to Janice and Tony being mobsters with out being affected.

Livia reminds me of Livia
the matriarch from "I, Claudius"

...like that family wasn't a piece o' work!
(Tiberius, Caligula, Nero... eek )
