Teacher fired for being gay

Teacher fired for being gay - 04/23/13 11:02 PM

For some reason this hasn't grown legs. It's been a week or so since it first came out but the only place I've seen anything other than locally is the Huffington Post. It so happens to be my Alma Mater.

I don't think what happened is right, I hope she wins. Here's the latest.

She knew the Church's stand on this topic. Why should she be an exception?

I saw that when it came out.
I'll bet the church doesn't want publicity.. and also doesn't want her teaching... and will just offer her money.

And why should she put up with such archaic intolerant bullish¡t? It's time to realize that people are people — period. And that includes the Diocese. Time to get w/the human program.

I guess the point is they are picking and choosing which morals clauses to uphold. For example they do nothing about teachers that get a divorce or have extramarital affairs, which are also against Catholic doctrine.

The woman was divorced while she was a teacher, but was not let go for that.

because up-tight parents wouldn't have an
issue with a divorcee in the lockerroom?

see: homophobia again rear it's ugly head

Just so I have this correct: She's gay and yet still took a job at a religious institution which frowns on her orientation? Sounds like her choice: archaic and intolerant bullsh!t comes with this particular job -- if she didn't want to put up with it, she shouldn't have applied in the first place ...

Yeah, the church are hypocritical dicks, but still I have to say I don't have a great deal of sympathy for her situation ...

No, she was married to a man when she took the job 19 years ago. Like I mentioned above she got divorced while she was working there, but they did not fire her for that even though divorce is also against Catholic doctrine.

Yeah what about the Church's stance on Priests and alter boys? crazy

They're being selective.

Ah, gotcha. That explains being there in the first place. I guess I have a tad more sympathy, although hoping they would have overlooked her switch to the other side of the plate might have been a bit naive -- even I know the benefits of religious hypocrisy often don't extend to The Gayness ...

While I understand that Jerry Sandusky actually
committed the crimes that people may associate
with coaches and gym teachers, and given the
price Penn State paid regarding the "What did
they know, and when did you know it?", added to
the recent horrendous scandals within the Church
itself (wounds deep enough to have possibly
influenced the choice of a Pope), AND, although
I don't agree with dumping all of this onto
someone who, as far as anyone knows, is
blameless of any wrong doing, other than not
going to confession, I can still understand their
decision to err on the side of caution.

I also have a feeling every side in this issue will
be using it as a test-case to score political points.

Should be interesting.
