HELP! Alphabetize by last name?

HELP! Alphabetize by last name? - 01/28/13 02:53 PM

I've been given 3 lists which contain hundreds of names each.
Is there a way to alphabetize by last name?
I can sort ascending using Pages, but only works on the first name.
I saw a tutorial online that says Word can alphabetize using "Word 2" in the sort drop down menu, but Office 2010 doesn't have it…
Any suggestions?

There are actually online sorters you may be able to try. Here are some Google results. (note:see next post) Hope it helps. There was somewhere in InDesign to do it if you have that. CS2 is free online.

Pffftt. To think I was about to offer to do it for you for the low, low, low price of $5 million. Ungrateful bastage! :-p

Can you import into a spreadsheet with names in different columns?

I was dwelling on it tonight and thought if I could replace column A (First names), with column B (Last names), my world could be alright again. It can't be that simple, can it?

Giz, I'll pay you a week from Tuesday.
I promise.

A week from Tuesday is fine, but I'll need a hamburger today... as collateral.

In a spread sheet like exel one can sort a group of columns by column. Not sure about Numbers but bet one could there also.

Yep--I was going to suggest importing the list into Excel and doing a sort that way. But that would mean making the lists delimited somehow. I wonder if you could do a Find and Replace in Word, changing spaces to commas, and importing the list as a comma-delimited file into Excel.

Sorted Column C to organize the 3 lists, then deleted column.
Switched Column A (Last Names) with B (First Names) and merged cell, which created a character Tab between the words.
Copy and pasted into Illustrator (Which was my destination for the whole thing), and used Find and Replace to change the Tabs to a Space.
Don't know if it's the correct way of doing it, but it worked! :-P

I've never been an expert with Word, but seems like I remember that one can convert to a list then copy tht list into excel into columns. I could be wrong about this, though

Since I quit teaching, I've had little use of excel, but when I was teaching, I had a good handle on it.

I see you got it.

If it was delimited somehow; tab, space, comma etc, it can be brought in to Excel, rearranged, sorted, then exported.

Alright, alright.
I was sick that day.
"Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD! "
