Newspapers! - 01/24/13 09:28 AM

There was a story in today's local paper that to me defines what's wrong with journalism. It's about admissions to Ivy League schools. And the article was just chock full of inconsistencies and just plain wrong, bad information. So here's what I wrote to the editor.

I’ve never read an article as incoherent as the one you printed concerning admissions at Ivy League Schools. One paragraph tells us that “fewer kids are applying and few kids are getting in,” and a couple of paragraphs later we’re told that “They’re not increasing the size of their freshman class, but their applicant pool is increasing.” So which is it, fewer kids applying or an increasing applicant pool? I believe the numbers concerning the dropping admissions rates, and using the magic or arithmetic conclude that it’s the latter that’s correct: more applicants, but the same number of admissions means a lower acceptance rate.

When not incoherent, the article is incorrect in its information. Yes those Ivy schools are expensive, and the sticker price is a shock. But how can the cost mean that fewer people are applying when “their applicant pool is increasing”? One reason for the increase is that what you say about financial aid is just wrong. At Harvard, for instance, students whose household income is under 65,000 pay nothing at all.

The statement that all financial aid is merit based is equally wrong. All students who go to Harvard or Yale have merit. If they didn’t they wouldn’t get in. Here’s what Harvard has to say about its financial aid policy: “Financial aid is available to all students based on assessed need.” Not a word about merit.

Not really trying to defend the cost of colleges, which is really an outrage--but at least get the facts right!

If you want to see inconsistency, redundancy, and 7th C- level writing skills, spend a few days reading the Dayton Daly News.

Newspapers (hardcopy) are dying anyway.. (I thought that was going to be the post message.)

I think it depends on the cities and/or states. NY, NJ & Pa local news papers (hardcopies) are still going strong. Not all are online either.

I don't know about anyone else but, I just don't see the point of reading a newspaper on a mobile device's 3x5 screen. WTF?

.

No home delivery of our local rag anymore. They snail mail it! I subscribed to e edition. It is a .pdf and I love reading it on my iMac. Make it large type, copy stuff, search the pages, etc.

The guy with the yellow funky wig that said he was going to prove Obama wasn't born in the U.S. is thinking about buying the NY Times. I think I read that on line someplace. Can't think of his name. He has Casinos here and there. Has a TV show where he fires people. Cheese! I can't keep typing until his name comes to me. I hate this aging process.;)

Why anyone would want to buy a newspaper now, I can't imagine. That guy even lost some of his casino/hotels.

IMO,

I heard from other sources , that colleges were going with the cash paying (foreign exchange) students the Chinese, Korean, Japanese nationals <-- thats where the real money is. They pay cash up front and don't carry guns.

What ya hearing is the minor 10% by state or federal law for local grown pups ?
That increasing applicant pool maybe is just for that requirement ?

Re: Newspapers! - 01/25/13 11:09 AM

Yah, right. The Sulzbergers — a mega-liberal family — are the dominant shareholders in the NYTimes. There's as much chance of them selling anything to Trump as there is of Trump saying something intelligent. smirk

Woke in middle of night and saw Donald Trump! A vision.

Did a Google search. I didn't imagine that snip of rumor news. Here is one:

Donald could save paper rag -- ha

Quote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Outspoken New York real estate mogul Donald Trump has been holding meetings about possibly buying the New York Times Co., according to a report in New York Magazine.

Shares of the New York Times (NYT) were slightly lower in early trading, suggesting that investors were not taking the report all that seriously. Even the New York Magazine piece describes a purchase as "improbable."

He sure can figure ways to get his name in the news!

Heh heh heh. You're the only one to get it. Mazel Tov! grin But look again. More typos. This is what that rag is riddled with. Too subtle I guess.

I thought interesting that they put the pictures of those being held in the county jails. In our little paper they just put the names with what their charged.

..

Dayton Daly is obviously a paper with a singular purpose:

To report on the daily dilly-dallying of Dayton residents. Typos just make it more interesting.

Simple!

Re Newspapers and adding other paper media -- books.

Was just reading that Barns & Noble is closing hundreds of stores. They are not going out of business, just shuffling around I guess. But one interesting note:

Quote:
Print book sales nationwide dropped 22% over the past five years according to Nielsen BookScan, as ebooks and other digital devices have become more popular. Where that leaves the retail side of Barnes & Noble's business in the medium term is unclear.

Well, a little over 4% a year isn't a whole lot, but it is creeping up the percentage drops.

The handwriting on the wall existence of internet, ebooks, etc. is the future and paper is sliding into oblivion with the stone tablet and hide/cave drawings. wink

Oh, and one more thing, have you read about the new libraries being built that have NO books on the shelves-- no paper. Google it. One University in Texas that I read about.

I guess this is an okay hijack wink

I have to travel two hours in any direction to get to a new book store...I could buy on line but I like to look thru the book before I buy. We do have a delightful used book store, guy started out 20 years a go buying and selling out of a hole in the wall size store, now he is in a huge two story building....books are half price, finish it and bring it back and he will buy it back for half your purchase price, or give you credit for the same amount. Sells used cd's dvd's and in the past year or so even some special order new books

Re: Newspapers! - 01/28/13 06:27 PM

I guess the biggest book publisher is the phone companies - Hawaiian Tel just delivered 500 white pages and 500 yellow pages. We told them to take 250 white and yellows back. Because last year only 50% of the residents even bother to pick up any books.

Seems like a big waste of paper to me but I guess they still have to offer the printed versions.
Posted by: KateSorensen

Re: Newspapers! - 01/28/13 08:40 PM

.

Our phone company does not offer white pages in some areas.

Quote:
Looking for your White Page Residential Listings?

Beginning in June 2012 Frontier will begin removing the RESIDENTIAL White Page listings in some selected FrontierPages telephone directories. If you are in one of these selected markets and would like to receive a FREE White Page Residential Listings supplement please call 1-800-900-7524. The residential white page listings can also be found online at www.Frontier.com/whitepages

Since people pay for yellow page listings, they throw one on our front porches.

Trouble is three other companies sell advertising cheap and they make phone books too and throw them on our front porches!! I just recycle, as I'm sure a lot of other folk do also. smile

I haven't cracked the binding of a phone book in probably close to 10 years. Straight from the bag to the bin.

I pulled my Yellow Pages ad years ago.

Phone book delivered to the front porch??wow we get ours thru the US bulk mail system...and everyone gets a phone book , even if you dont have a phone... got three of them this year alone...one at the PO box, one at home address...and another at the apartment...guess if I can not find a phone number in one book I could try the other ones

WTF is a Phone Book? Is that like a new iPhone case or something?
Posted by: Nana

Re: Newspapers! - 01/29/13 12:15 PM

We get two by US Mail! One is a combination of the Yellow & White pages which is very thick & large. Remember the Sears Catalog?

The other is just the Yellow pages and is very small in size. The size of an iPad just not as thin. laugh

Both books are from Verizon and are customized by which county you live in.
Both books also have hundreds of coupons!
