Check my website please - 03/12/03 01:06 PM

I am "learning" to use LiveMotion (Adobe's version of Flash) and have decided to redesign my entire website in Flash format. Not a whole lot of bells and whistles, but some.

I would love it if everyone could go to the site, and give me feedback. I'm looking for comments about everything... design, speed, compatability, etc... If you post anything about the site here, please let me know if you're on a PC or Mac and what browser you are using. I'm interested to see how the site works on a PC.

A few notes:
1. The Portfolio link doesn't work - I haven't finished that page yet.
2. Safari users will see extra space around the sides of the window (much like DaddyMac's problem he discussed a while back).
3. Some link colors don't match (some have white links with blue "overs" and some are blue with white "overs".
4. The sound made when clicking a button is messed up - it works, but after you click the button and it makes the click sound, it also plays the "over" sound again... I haven't figured out how to stop it from playing the "over" sound once clicked.

Other than that, everything should work. I have set the Flash file to resize if you resize the browser window - I think it's a nice touch for those who have bad eyes.

Here's the link, and please be HONEST but GENTLE with your comments because this is my first time using Flash animation.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Do we have to be honest and gentile?

Seriously though i think the site looks great. The only problem (and this is an opinion) is the sound it makes when you move your cursor over a button, it makes me cringe, and that's before clicking on it. That's all. Great site!

I'm not sure I really like the mouse trails. Fun and cool for the first 20 seconds, but it wears thin quickly.

looks pretty sharp.

I'm not sure I would want to post too much personal stuff on the about me page (the link to your .mac account)

that's it. hope I was gentle

Very nice- very slick, too!

Don't know if I like the little trail that follows the mouse pointer, but other than that it's a pretty friendly site!

A couple of tips:

-I don't know if I would have all that text slide in from the side. It might be quicker to have each paragraph appear on screen, one after the other. Any type of motion with objects that large slow the whole thing down to a crawl...

- I would have the link to your .mac site open in a new window...My #1 rule: don't EVER let the viewer get distracted and get away from your site...

That's why the experts always advise not putting your favorite 'links' on a site...unless your site is meant to be some sort of gateway....

Other than that, it functions very well! The words in the beginning "fast, affordable, etc" went by at light speed- maybe slowing them down a bit would be wise too...Just so people can actually read what they are..

How exactly did you get the Flash to resize with the window? I might already know this, but I'm a bit rusty...

p.s. I'm working on finding some code that will eliminate the empty space in Safari- I may have found a site that does it...stay tuned.

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
I can't stand the mouse trails, but the site works fine to me (Explorer 5.0, Mac OS 9.2) and I like it.

To address some of your tips/concerns:

The text sliding: "But I REALLY like sliding text dammit!!! Maybe I could speed it up a bit.

.Mac site link: It is set to open in a new window - it does for me in Safari, IE, and Netscape as well as another friend running IE6 on PC. I'll check the code again though.

Fast, Affordable words: Yeah, I was afraid they went by too fast. I want them to be fast, but not so fast that you can't read them obviously. I'll slow them down a bit.

To get the flash file to resize when you resize the browser window, you simply select the flash doc in GoLive (I assume it's the same for DreamWeaver) and set the size parameters in the Inspector dialog box to 100% HZ and 100% VT

I'm getting reports of the "pop-up" window opening half off the screen for some users - both PC and Mac. I can't figure out how to have it open in the center of the users screen, so I may have to kill the pop-up and just have it open in the parent window.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

You could always set the window to open at the top left-hand corner of the screen....it's the only really reliable piece of code I've come across..

Anything else dealing with 'half of the screen width", etc, doesn't always work...

It's like window.open(0,0) or something like that...

Take a look at Code Avenue for some suggestions...

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
The site looks pretty good. Flash can get annoying but you didn't over do it.

In reply to:

I can't figure out how to have it open in the center of the users screen

I find http://javascript.internet.com/generators/popup-window.html helpful to make popup windows. It includes an option to open in center of the window.

But, come on you didn't even adhere to the "fundamentals"

Ryan

The code that site generates seems pretty awkward...

Where exactly would I insert that if I had a link I wanted to pop open a window with the dimensions I specified?

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 02:11 PM

Lose the mouse-trails and tone down the SFX a bit. I think the sliding text rate is good, but the intro is a bit too "energetic". Maybe slow it down a skosh. My biggest complaint would be all that white type and black background. Just feels cold ana bit harsh on these old peeper.

Having said that, I know it's a work-in-progress, and I think you're going in a good direction.

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 02:12 PM

I might not be sure what your asking. But the java-script goes in the head section, and the link goes on the actual page. The comment tags in the code it gives should tell you where to put the html.

Ryan

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 02:27 PM

Overall looks clean, nice discreet design work, everything opened up just fine for me. The pop-up window opened up on the upper left hand side, the intro was kinda fast, but you've already read about that. Personal preference, I'm not too thrilled about black backgrounds, but it still works. I'm at work running IE 5.1 under OS 9.2.

I have removed the pop-up window for now, and changed the "resize" capability of the flash file until I can get things straightened out on the pop-up window stuff.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 02:50 PM

Rather than a glowing "click to enter" after the flash intro, I think it would be more elegant to pause and then bring you home without the click.

One other observation with fresh eyes : the j/d logo in the "circle with slash" icon doesn't always lend itself to a positive image.

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 04:19 PM

Works for me, using Safari with a dial up. I found the mouse trails a bit frivolous and I'm not a fan of white type on color but, overall, it's a pretty clean job.

drjohn

[i]My photographs[i]

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 04:36 PM

Not too shabby for a first time try! I agree with what others have said about the mouse trails. Fun for a little bit, then not so much fun (although I like the effect when you go over a button and the trail fills the button with color). I find white text on dark background harder on the eyes, but like Steve, these are pretty old peepers that I've got. On the whole, impressive.

I'm using Safari v. 60, by the way.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

Pretty nice Gizmo.

The trails do get annoying after a bit. Perhaps just restrict them to the navigation part of the page. Or, ditch them completely.

I don't know about the tools and about me parts. Sounds perhaps a bit too personal. Do you really need to list your hardware and software? Is that the usual thing to do?

Easy to get around the site, like the way the text slides in.

Very nice really.

Safari v.62

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 06:51 PM

Actually, that's a good point...you list all your hardware AND your address...that might be a bad combo..

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a
Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 07:12 PM

I can see him listing software since he is also saying that he is available for production. Those clients would need to know his skillset, just as if he were applying for a job. But I think the hardware is irrelevant.

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 07:19 PM

Um... where do you see my address - cause I don't see it anywhere. Are you sure you're looking at the Beta site and not the "live" site?

As Nebo stated, I list software because it's generally asked for by potential clients... the hardware is there because a few potential clients (usually agencies) have asked in the past, plus it helps to fill the page. In some small kind of way, it also goes to show that I'm a serious business... I'm not just some goofball hack artist with a cheap Mac and some spare time.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 07:21 PM

I have made some changes to the pages... I've added a color/gradient backdrop behind the text. Please let me know if it makes it easier on the eyes... or if it looks horrific. I'm not leaving the black behind, so this is all I could think of. I also slowed down the animation on the intro page, set the window to open a bit larger than the main page and removed the auto-resize capability.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 07:27 PM

How I would stop the over audio from playing after a hit.

This will be for Flash, but I would assume the concepts will be the same for LiveMotion, just the terms may be different. I cant' say for sure since I haven't seen LiveMotion for quite some time. Too bad they never got that application up to speed in all areas, it's timeline structure and creation tools were SO much better than Flash's.

I would have each section of the site set up as a scene. In each scene, the button for that scene would be changed to a graphic, since you don't need a button to go to "services" when that is already where you are. In Flash, you can specify which frame of a graphic to display, and whether or not to animate it. Set that graphic to the frame that corresponds with the over state, and don't animate it. That should do it. For an example of that in action, check out tdphoto.com.

The settings in Flash:
Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 07:36 PM

I'm probably gonna start learning MM Flash... as I believe Adobe has killed the LiveMotion product. I'm just guessing, but it's been over a year and a half since they've revved it, they no longer bundle it in their "Web Collection" and most if not all catalogs don't even offer it for sale anymore. The only place I see it for sale is on Adobe's website. Too bad, because I like the interface much better than Flash.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 08:05 PM

The gradient is a 'little' easier on the eyes but the new smaller window in black popping up over the main page window in black is a bit confusing. I lost it twice by inadvertent clicks on the back window (while playing with the curser chaser). Opps, I'm supposed to be looking at the site.

drjohn

[i]My photographs[i]

Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 09:14 PM

Nice look. It loaded quick on dialup. However the intro, much as I enjoy it, may get tedious even though it is rather quick. Maybe a skip intro link? I like the j/d in the circle. It is clean and professional. I am not a fan of white text, but this was quite easy for me to read and I think it stands out fine. Nice contemporary look to the main pages although on my dial up the text took long enough to slide in for me to wonder what was up. The curser trail, I liked, but unfortunately it drew me to want to play with it, (wheeee!) thereby distracting me from the business of the page. I liked the rollover effects and did enjoy the sounds. Overall, very slick for a first effort and I am very impressed. It's professional and contemporary. Appropriate for today's climate and also incorporating enough design to convey the creativeness of the artist. I like it it a lot. It inspires me to try to figure out Live Motion. I opened it once but didn't for the life of me know what to do with it. A most excellent effort, Jimmy.

"You can stand tall without standing on someone. Re: Check my website please - 03/12/03 10:25 PM

Speed-great, even on dial-up.

Design, let me list what I don't like, everything else is cool:
1. Don't like popping up windows on entering. Although many use such a feature, I think no benefit to the user.
2. The little halo following my cursor, it's feels like someone is following me.
3. The sound that the buttons make is too metallic, hurts your ear after a while.
4. I like your name big on the top, because it becomes a typo deisgn, but the phone, email is way too big, it's shouting.
5. The tools/hardware is too detailed. No need to list mouse, router. You could say broadband wireless network instead. Would make more sense to most and sounds cool.

But this is just me, I not meant to be harsh.
