Design help needed - 03/20/07 08:25 PM

I am doing a poster for a benefit concert for Relay For Life. Last year I did this

It is letter size. I really just have to change the date and my friend that requested it said we could use last years. Of course that is no fun so I want to do something like this.

I am having problems figuring out a way to do the coils. Anyone have a quick idea? I looked at some tutorials and for brushes but nothing is looking right. My other alternative is to do some of the neat swirls I saw from BittBox on CreativeGuy's blog as free vector downloads. Thanks Jimmy!

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

BTW I don't want to copy exactly but I do like the spirals. I did find a bigger image.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

I'll bet dollars to donuts that somewhere within the following two links you'll be able to find a dingbat/picture font that will have some ornamental shapes or frames that will fit the bill perfectly. Happy hunting!

http://www.houseoflime.com/dings.htm
http://www.dingbats-uk.org.uk/mvdl/dinglinks1.html

Thanks I have a custom shape that is almost there but still too angular. Appreciate the help!

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

I am not much help here but how are you going to cram all that type into this image even with the spirals ?

Re: Design help needed - 03/20/07 09:09 PM

I only want the frame and it will be thin around the whole poster. The black with the inside frame.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

Here ya go, a quick one just for fun.

The filigree surround was made out of a single Bodoni Ornament. I wanted it to look like wood, but didn't spend enough time on it.

I created the Guitar Chord frame in Illustrator. Variations of the frame can be achieved by simply turning off and on select layers. It's built on letter-sized paper and you can isolate the Guitar Chord frame and stretch and squash it to fit just about any space necessary. The AI file is 1 MB and you're welcome to it Shelli.

Below are a few of the combinations possible...

The final frame...

Guitar Chord frame...

Simple black over white...

Simple White over black...

M i c h a e l (OFI)

I should mention that the White over Black version is transparent in the white area, which means you could put a box of any color or gradient behind the black background and it will show through.

M i c h a e l (OFI)

WOW! Thanks everyone, what a bunch of nice guys, including Gary with his helpful email. My plan was exactly what Michael did so it will work great. I plan on not having it transparent, instead I am going to make it a textured metal, liked brushed aluminum although I also have some rust styes then turn it grayscale. I will post the finished product.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

Never mind I opened the jpg in Illustrator and ran a Live Trace and got a vector image that I stretched and it worked perfect in Photoshop.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

Re: Design help needed - 03/21/07 10:48 PM

G4D's work on the spiraly frame is cool, and pretty decent, and would work a treat if you've firmly decided to "borrow" the look of the image you posted.

But iRock...you definitely need to keep those two links I posted handy, and dig through them as you have the chance.

There's LOTs of good free stuff there. I've found some things that are rendered with more attention to detail than much generic clip-art you find. And because they're actual fonts, they're sizeable just like any other vector art.

Yes I need to get this out quick, but I did linger on those links for a while last night. Thanks they have a bounty of riches. I have a feeling I will spend lots of time later on them. Here is what I ended up with. I will do some more tweaking and then they can have it.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

Nice job, and much more stylish than last year's flyer!

Next, you ought to see if you can talk The Shire into a logo makeover. It's a little messy, but the core idea is OK.

Thanks, I barely knew InDesign when I did it last year. I get lots of great tips around here you know.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

How are these being printed? And how many of them?

(I'm concerned about bleed, for one thing).

Re: Design help needed - 03/22/07 06:00 AM

Sparky, printed on an office printer, probably laser. I am going to print it at work today to see what needs tweaked. Maybe 25 copies are all that will be printed to place around town.

Thanks John but I'm not a huge listener of this music. I know the girl that went to school with him and he does this as a favor to her. We did go when he played this last summer with Merle Haggard. He is phenomenally good. My friend does get me in for free and I always enjoy going but I probably wouldn't listen much to anyone else of this genre.

oh yeah, that's going in the blog

The flyer looks really good. I'd probably like the music. And Chris is hot, in that cool cowboy way.

Enjoyed watching the project in progress and picking up links and tips. Lurkin' can be .

[color:blue] Talk about things and nobody cares . . .
