Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 12:15 AM

I'm tired and it's 3am and I have to be awake in 3.5 hours, so this'll be choppy. Plus I'm still dizzy from the odor of the Napoleon Dynamite look-alike I had to sit next to in the theater. And fat jedi geeks hitting each other with plastic lightsabers.

This movie is mind-numblingly dense with objects. You are bombarded with CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI on top of CGI. And then, just when you think you're seeing real people.... CGI!!!!

I just sat through two hours of ILM's resume. We get it... they can do CGI... STOP ALREADY! This movie actually made me HATE computer graphics. (I'm punching my Finding Nemo DVD right now!) It was so tiring. Example: They have the real guy's head for the Clone Trooper when he's without helmet... but it's on a CGI body! WTF??? And if there's one thing ILM still can't do, it's making a CGI human walk/stand/shift weight like a human. They just can't do it. So put the dude in a suit and film it... when has this become a non-option??

Yoda's a badass. The Emperor dude is awesome (though when his face goes ugly he looks like Dan Aykroyd did in "Nothing But Trouble"). Everyone else was... well, they showed up for work at least.

Wilhelm scream: present. Millennium Falcon-type ship: present. Heck, the same medical droid that gave Luke a new arm put Darth Vader together! Small universe, huh!?? And the Lucas-esque scene transition wipes were there, but most were really wacky. Anakin turned too quickly to the dark side. And did we ever think we'd see a chick with her legs up on a table giving birth in a Star Wars flick?? I mean, really!!??!

2 stars out of 4. Episode order of greatness (best to worst): IV, V, VI, III, II, I
(I used to think Empire was best, but I had to revert to A New Hope as the top spot.) Yes, the one with the Ewoks even beat this final installment.
I just saw it too...

In reply to:

And fat jedi geeks hitting each other with plastic lightsabers

Same at our theater

I agree with just about everything you said (except V is better than IV, you're horribly wrong there).

Movie moved at a much brisker pace than the previous two. I was hoping to see more Clone Trooper coolness. Like in clone wars.

Final thought... James Earl Jones didn't sound too comfortable reading his lines.

Thanks for the report guys. Now maybe these guys can come in out of the rain. They have been there every night when I go home and it has been storming like mad here. Rain in monsoon quantities, thunder and a little lightening but yet there they are when I get home from work. Check out what the one says about someone yelling at them.

Here's something I don't get about CGI.

After what...a solid 15 year history of modern CGI....it all still looks fake. It's always very obvious to me which backgrounds are fake and which are real, as well as what's computer generated and what's not.

Perhaps the majority of the public doesn't care.

A year or so ago, I saw an interview on E!. They were predicting scripts will be sent to the cast for voice recording, and computer graphics will do everything else. If the industry allows this to happen, it would be a disaster..

As Sam said, Finding Nemo is one thing, but overusing animation in a classic series like Star Wars makes it less appealing..

[color:blue].........................................
Loading, please wait...

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 04:17 AM

One of the big problems with Lucas and CGI is how we have to watch ships just fly around. If I see one more ship drop its landing gear I'm going to explode. What's next? Are we going to watch Obi Wan stop off at the Space Kwik E Mart for some space milk on the way to fight Darth Vader? Let's run errands with a Jedi for a few minutes! Then we can watch him workout and wash his hands and eat and put foot powder in his boots and...

It's the equivalent of watching a movie about a runner and spending a solid 10 minutes watching him tie his shoes. WE UNDERSTAND THAT SHIPS LAND AND TAKE OFF!!!

I used to think V was the best episode, but after watching the two a few times in recent past, IV has nudged the top spot... only by a little, mind you! IV has the least amount of problems. Dagobah drags Empire down and down hard. Very boring! Plus IV is pure, extra virgin Star Wars. Long before doing things just for coolness sake or to one-up previous films. Things were done out of necessity to tell the story rather than to wow the fans. There's an innocence in IV that none of the other movies capture. Being dark and throwing in a plot twist doesn't automatically make a great movie. Plus I like Vader as just a bad guy rather than a daddy gone wrong.

(If you think about it... Empire started this whole sequel/prequel mess. You have Empire to thank for Jar Jar... THAT'LL keep you up at night! )

Dude, there's four clone troopers standing talking to Obi Wan. They filmed the same actor four times and put each head on a CGI body. WHY???

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 07:42 AM

I don't get what you're saying- all the clones are supposed to look alike, so why wouldn't they put the same head on all 4 bodies?

[color:green]5.19.05 - The 'Jedi Slaughter' tour begins!

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 07:48 AM

Right. But why are the bodies CGI?? They can't have this dude walk around in a real costume four times and composite them later?? Surely that's easier and better-looking than pasting his head on a fake body... and four times over to boot! The CGI movements are herky jerky.

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 07:50 AM

Well, just watching IV and V back to back the other night, the thing that really puts Empire up there on my list is the pure emotion. The relationship between Han and Leia seems real. You really see Luke's pain when Varder reveals he's his father. You really get into the characters. Dont' get me wrong. IV is very good, the characters in Empire just seemed more real.

The thing that really pissed me off last night in the movie was Droids. What's Lucas's obsession with droids doing funny things and making cute noises? I was expecting an awesome space fight scene at the beginning of the movie. Like in episode IV. I was hoping to see squadrons of fighters doing awesome dogfighting scenes, not "funny droids doing cute things".

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 07:56 AM

Oh yeah, the cutesy droids were annoying. I kept reading about this monstrous space battle at the beginning (though that long opening shot was off the hook!). That was a lie. All they showed was Anakin and Obi Wan try to shake those tiny bug droids.

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/19/05 01:44 PM

I went to the 1:45 today. Cheaper and had the whole role to myself. Of course Mr. I HaveToBuy$10PopcornAndEatItNoisley always sits behind me. I've just come to expect it. What I was thinking when I saw the CGI humans was that they looked and moved like a game. Could be just more marketing. So that they look similar in the games people will pay $40-$50 a pop for.

I don't know if Anakin turned to quickly, but I always thought (since I was a kid) it was the death of his wife that caused him to turn not the fear of her death.

I have to say overall I enjoyed it, but I didn't go to the late show so I wasn't tired and my hopes were not high. I thought II was the worst of the bunch. It's hard to get into the intensity of fight scene with people you know survive and are in IV and so on. There's some of that problem with III too, but at least you know Anakin is going to get messed up.

The writing and dialogue in this one is as weak as it was in the last two, but it had some more interesting bits to make up for it. When vader takes his first breath you could hear a pin drop in theater.

Can somebody explain why lightsabers have different colors? Mace Windu was purple (close to red, a Sith color) so does that mean he was borderline?

-------
Aren't you a little old for post-modern nostalgic irony?

Different crystals inside.

The only reason Mace's was purple was that Samuel L. Jackson requested it be different from the other Jedis so he could find himself in the arena scene in ep2.

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/20/05 08:57 AM

FYI, Jackson actually requested a purple lightsaber from Lucas so he could pick himself out of a crowded fight scene...

Back in Black...

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/20/05 10:36 AM

According to some sources the colour indicates the jedi type/skill of the wielder:

Red - Sith, no differentiation for skill set.
Blue - Jedi, specialist lightsaber, in a lightsaber duel these guys are the best, but their specialisation in saber leads to less ability in other force disciplines.
Green - Jedi, specialist in force powers, more attuned to the force how it works and how it influences others. They tend not to be quite so hot with a saber, due to their more sendentary studies of the force.
Yellow - Jedi, balanced, devotes equal time to lightsaber studies as they do to force powers.

and we already covered purple. So ends the geekness lesson of the day.

Truth is a 3 edged sword.

Re: Episode III: Just saw it! - 05/20/05 10:39 AM

Yellow is reserved for very rigid Jedis... the ones in which the saber actually extends from inside their arm. The tip of the saber is very thin, and usually breaks off after a short while.
