It often amuses me that american complain about petrol (gas) prices, here in the uk it costs 80.5p ($1.52) for a litre that is £3.66 ($6.95) per gallon!

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman

Here in Texas the cheapest I've found is $2.11 for regular, of course I have to use premium in my car which is around $2.27....and that's a bargain. I work by DFW Airport and premium out there is a whopping $2.70. Needless to say I fill up closer to home. If hybrids weren't so outrageous I'd seriously consider one but at the moment they are as expensive as luxury/sports cars. I saw a news story yesterday about a guy that just bought a Toyota Prius hybrid and is selling it for a $10,000 profit on eBay.

Using premium may not be the best choice in this high-price era. What I mean is fewer and fewer people are buying premium, which means the fuel is probably old and stale and can cause problems. It did for a friend of mine.

Re: So what's the price of gas? - 04/18/05 09:28 AM

I have tried regular and my car won't run on it without problems. The stock 300 hp rating wouldn't allow it and I've modified the engine to produce 425 hp which needs every octane point it can get. I would have to add octane booster to compensate, which is too expensive. I have to use Mobil1 synthetic oil too. In fact the user manual doesn't just recommend it, it states you MUST use synthetic oil and premium gas for proper daily operation. I go to the same station to fill up and I haven't had any problem with the premium yet.

Yes...being middle-aged, after my Viagra kicks in if my erections last more than 4 hours it's recommended that I seek medical attention immediately. So I need a car to get to the doctor really fast.

On SNL they said if it lasts that long to call your friends and brag.

The highest grade gas can cause problems in some of the Chevys. Too high of an octane made my dad's pick up run like crap. Going to lower grade solved it. It says in the manual stay under a 90 rating.

In reply to:

Using premium may not be the best choice in this high-price era.

Well that really depends on the car. My car requires fuel that's at least 91 octane.

It will run on regular gas, but the car retards the spark... and I get much worse fuel economy because of it. So, if I put in cheap gas I essentially end up spending a lot more money because my mileage is about 5 MPG worse.

Around the corner, in the 'village' part of town - $2.39, up the road in the 'town' proper, it's $2.19, both for regular. Paid $2.13 this morning, due to 6ΒΆ off per gallon 'Monday special'.
