As many of you know Google has a new, very nice map site called http://maps.google.com/
Google added a satellite map to same.
Just click on "satellite"
Then I entered my street address and Google zoomed almost right to my house via satellite.
And you can zoom in and out...very, very impressive.

Wow! That's pretty cool! And if you drag your mouse over you can go to different parts of the area. Thanks for finding this!

Must still be beta and doesn't work with Hawaii, unless they moved Hawaii here!

Cool, it didn't take long for them to leverage that Keyhole acquisition. If you've got a PC banging around somewhere, you should demo that software, fun stuff.

I looked at my old neighborhood in Methuen and it didn't get as close as other satellite maps I've seen. On the Google map my old house was a blob, but I've seen it elsewhere where you could make out the driveway and bushes.

Yeah, it's cool...it's just not as good as some others I've seen where you're right...you could make out a guy waving on the rooftop.

I think at one time, Mapquest of Switchboard offered a really good free one.

The US satellite ones seem much better than the ones of my home town in Canada - so blurry it's hardly even worth the effort.

Beautiful location but you can still get 3 notches closer (but you know that).
That is up north some place in MN...where?

I noticed that a lot of the rural areas wouldn't allow you to zoom in all the way (they don't have the data).

The resolution really isn't very good, but considering its free.... pretty cool.

Actually, six miles over the border into Ontario. I left it out of total zoom to show the general area - the northeast part of Saganaga Lake, which is half in Minnesesota and half in Canada.

Ready for this one, in 2008 there is a chance you will need a passport to come back into the US.

I haven't been that far east to see Saganaga Lake.
My Minnesota trips to Canada were via International Falls.

John

Seems as if there is any kind of military installations near by, like my town has a large base the zoom function is disabled in satellite map.

To cross check this idea - In standard map mode all the military installations are greened out and not placed on the map, even the Army Golf course does not show.

Makes sense - the military certainly don't want anyone to get a detailed satellite map of their bases.

Re: Wow! This is the most amazing map ever... - 04/05/05 08:39 PM

Not worried - we get an anual "Canpass" which allows free travel in and out. And there hasn't been any customs on the lake for some years. As you may have noticed there aren't any roads to where we are. We have to go the last twelve miles by boat.

I know.
It is just so ridiculous. Passports for Canada.
Instead of passport, it used to be password as in where were you born?

We have so many it's hard to keep track of them all. And we ignore transitory mud puddles, swamps, and bogs that other states proudly proclaim as "lakes".

It gives an interesting perspective from my house to the tip of the lava flows from Mt. St. Helens, huh? The point upper left is our address.

Look for the lava colored wagon - in a month or two.
