New forum software

New forum software - 09/03/04 04:51 AM

Hey guys and gals,
Stan, Slava and I are currently in the process of adding some new features to MacMinute and we would like to get your thoughts on new forum software. After an exhaustive search, we kept coming back to phpbb. Please have a look at the features and let us know what you think. We are switching software for one main reason: integrated story feedback.

However, there may be some big drawbacks. How important are the following to you?

1) Old messages/threads
2) Usernames carried over
3) Your forum ranking (how many posts you have)

Names should not be a problem, nor messages, but ideally we would like to start from scratch. As you can imagine, it would be a helluva lot easier to start completely clean. We have known many Webmasters with large forums, and trying to convert is an absolute nightmare. I guess what we're saying is what is more important to you... story feedback and new forum features or your current status.

Cheers,
Larry
RE: Cloistered Politics/War discussion area.

I have to say this is a good idea.

We started ONE thread over in the Adobe Photoshop Lounge and called it "The Stupid Politics and War Thread." It's raison d'etre was to keep all of that stuff out of other threads, where its presence was causing a lot of great discussions to explode in flames.

It has worked remarkably well, because visitors knew where to go if they wanted to engage in that sort of stuff, and where to stay away from if they didn't.

Recently, however, one particularly contentious participant got way out of hand with personal attacks. He was put on Read-Only status, and the thread was locked. But, the thread lasted for a couple months (from 18 June until earlier this week) and fomented a lot of good discussion (2200 posts), despite the heat it generated at times, and it pretty much kept the crap out of other threads.

Since that person's banishment (he'll be reinstated...he's just being given a "spanking" for awhile), another Politics thread has been started. I expect it will last a long time as well. And because the participants know that political arguments are to be contained there, the rest of the Lounge has been much friendlier to navigate for those who wish to sidestep the arguments.

How about a size limit in pixels and kbs for the signature. You can set up prefs so it won't upload anything not in the specifications. Is that possible?

For Mike

Re: New forum software - 09/02/04 12:00 PM

Unlike my thoughts on them at the new MacWorld forums (where I actually prefer NOT to have any images at all), they have a reason... they don't have a "Lounge" forum, so there's no reason for photos to be posted.

But here is a different story. I don't think this forum has ever been predominantly about Mac subjects, rather, it's been all about family & friends - and pictures are wanted, no matter how long it takes to download them. Unlike my thoughts on them at the new MacWorld forums (where I actually prefer NOT to have any images at all), they have a reason... they don't have a "Lounge" forum, so there's no reason for photos to be posted.

Well, I think the ability should be there, although I don't see why it's so hard to just put a limit on file size or something...

I actually had an instance come up where I wanted to show someone what a certain type of cable looked like, but I had to throw up a hyperlink instead... Hey back at cha.. My little contribution on the matter is only that I enjoy the different signatures that some of the folks here have..the little sayings..the pictures..for myself who is computer challenged I enjoy those who change them often,,Giz, iRocks, are good examples, the mood and personality of the signitures are fun...kind of nice to see..but I am game for what ever transpires..Cheers

Re: New forum software - 09/03/04 08:56 AM

For me old posts are important, but if I may suggest don't settle for phpbb. It's a great forum software, but you can do so much more with Drupal for example. I do have phpbb on my site, but my site is just so much smaller than macminute cafe.

If you do go for phpbb you may want to consider to add the attachement mod, so that people can upload images and files to share even if they don't have their own servers. This way you can also make sure that the links will not brake if the individuals move them from their servers. You can also allow people to upload their avatars to your servers with phpbb. I think that's a very useful feature, although you need to consider if you can afford all the bandwidth, but I guess you have an unlimited account.

I would not want to loose old posts and usernames, but if you have to let it be.

Let me know if you need any help with the phpbb installation, especially the attachement mod. How about themes? Do you already have a designer to do it for you?

Re: New forum software - 09/04/04 01:51 PM

But if it's free, that's taking up even more server space. I don't think it's going to happen.

Posted by: iraszl

Re: New forum software - 09/04/04 01:58 PM

what you can do (and i did too) is to limit the max space for a user and the whole board, so you can make sure that your forum doesn't get flooded with two hundred 300MB files every day. you can allow like 5MB per head. that's enough for a year for most users for uploading screenshots and ocassional digipicts and this forum doesn't have more than 100 very active users, so that makes it 500MB for attachements for a year. that's not a big of a deal. it doesn't cost much, and easy to maintain.

Re: New forum software - 09/05/04 01:57 AM

That may be a fine plan, Ira...to limit attachments, in whichever way.

But really: How many people DON'T have access to some free serverr space along with their ISP account? (I'm asking...I don't really have actual figures on this question, of course) I'm operating under the belief that most people do, and they can load their images there and serve them up inline with their forum replies themselves. No real detriment to MM's servers.

Barring that, there are plenty of places online to house images that will allow direct hotlinking and display on forums like this one.

Setting up a forum's permissions to allow attachments is kind of an antiquated procedure, if you ask me.
