Hate to be a bitch.

After all when you can watch a online video (advertisement) of Lion - and then cannot even watch the latest keynote about Lion.

There is something really really stupid at Apple.

I don't like being stiff armed <-- enough said.

Sreve,
I have NO idea what you mean.

You can watch the keynote, the front page even has a link front & center

No, that's not "enough said". You are being as clear as mud.

Stiff-armed about what? What exactly do you think Apple is "stiff arming" you over?

iBook... the rumors say 1 AM Thurs.... that would be the earliest... I`m guessing 3-4 AM EST maybe til the switch is complete. However Lion might not be released until mid-morning or so... we`re all guessing. grin

I can watch it in 10.5.8. Did you even try before whining about it, or do you just like to bitch?

John

You need Snow Leopard to watch the Keynote, (( It does say that in the Requirements)

Come on buddy, I know what the specs say, but did you even try it? Like I said above, it plays in Leopard. I also just tried it in 10.4.11 on a G4 mini with Safari 3 and QT 7.5.5, it plays there too.

You're wrong about this one. No strong arming by Apple, just your strong head, and refusing to even click and try it.

I wouldn't have thought they would release at 1am.

Today is the rumored update to either MacBook air, Mac mini, MacBook, Mac pro...so we'll see

If one of those happens, bet Lion gets released today too.

1pm est

Today isn't the day, and neither is tomorrow, or even early next week. wink

Apple just asked developers for their Lion-updated apps earlier this week. They're going to give them a week or more to get them submitted, review/approve them, and get them set up on the MAS.

Late next week, or possibly the last week of July is a lot more likely.

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/15/11 09:06 AM

I'm still trying to decide if I want to do an erase & install of Snow Leopard so I have a clean system with no 3rd-party add-ons installed before upgrading to Lion.

I normally do a clean install on new OS upgrades - but I skipeed doing that for Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Posted by: iBookmaster

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/15/11 10:07 AM

I'll probably install right over my current Snow Leopard and if there are any problems, I'll format, install Snow Leopard, upgrade to 10.6.8, install 10.7, then migrate my info from Time Machine.

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/16/11 12:06 PM

This is the first time in the history of OS X that I'm not on the edge of my seat waiting for the update. Not because I don't think it's interesting or a worthwhile upgrade, but because iOS has stolen the show for me.

I'll still upgrade on day one, though. Debating on whether or not I'll do a fresh install …probably won't. I'll wait until I get a new Mac and start from scratch then.
Posted by: John Rougeux

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/16/11 12:21 PM

I totally agree. I will upgrade for a few reasons (icloud). Debating on getting a trackpad because I don't see myself using it that much.

And when ios5 comes out, there will be no reason

Gives just a spinning beach ball for 5 to 10 minutes. Then I give up.

However.
I just tried again today - and it works.

Possible since that my (cable amplifier) had no power. I discovered this just a few days ago due to the amplifier power supply is behind a 6 X 4 foot tall book case,, which takes 2 people to move <-- so how that got disconnect is anyones guess ? ? and for how long ?

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/19/11 03:49 PM

So it's coming out on the 20th US time? I have a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and btw, a memory of 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Apple says this is enough, but I know next to nothing about processors. Is this on the slow end I would guess? Installing a new OS near the minimum specs possible can leave one with a pretty miserable response time, if memory* serves.

*my actual brain cell memory donchaknow

Right, this is a tech question I guess....

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/19/11 04:08 PM

That should run pretty good... but you could really use more ram. 1 GB is on the cusp of "just tolerable" in my book.
Posted by: lanovami

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/19/11 04:18 PM

Yeah, I was only going to ask about the processor as Apple didn't mention RAM, but thought I'd better add the RAM in too - it is pretty low by today's standards.
Posted by: NucleusG4

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/19/11 04:42 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Lion

System requirements
x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.) [10][14]
At least 2GB of RAM[15]
Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed[10]
At least 4GB of free disk space for downloading[15]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).

Furthermore, Lion does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

1 Gig is OK. You'll just be using more virtual memory, which will be only a tad slower when launching apps. Even at 2 Gig (which is what I have), there is considerable VM swapping with apps launching. Once the app(s) are running, I barely notice any speed hits unless I'm switching among memory intensive apps.

The specs say 2G though, I wonder if they'll let you install it if you only have 1G.

Re: When do you think Lion will be released? - 07/20/11 06:23 AM

I'm wondering how this download only will play out. At 4G there will be quite a few people that will not be able do it, or it will just seem too cumbersome. Apple seems to think everybody should have a big pipe I guess.

For example people with low end DSL connections that are typically around 256-512kbp/s, it will take 20-40 hours at full speed.

Here's a handy site to help calculate how long.

Got mine via 10mbs cable. It took a while (~45 minutes to an hour) - about 1 1/2 - 2 hours total for everything to complete and boot up. I like this delivery method - near instant gratification. cool

Not sure if I like the new, gray, 2D scroll bars though. smirk

Well, then it's a good thing they are going to offer it via Thumb drive!

Quote:
the company announced today that the new operating system will also be made available on a USB thumb drive beginning next month. The thumb drive option will be priced at $69, compared to $29.99 for Mac App Store distribution.
