Great photo for a hot August release. Since 10.1 I have always just hit the upgrade button. With this stripped down, no PPC code in this OS, I think for the first time I am going to do a clean wipe the disk out to all zeroes and install. My MacBook Air has gotten slow as a dog, or at least Safari has so that one sure needs it.

Maybe get a bigger drive installed which is probably causing most of the slowness since it is pretty full.

Will an Apple Computer Store swap a MBA drive out at the store? is there a non costly SSD drive at say, 120GB yet?

Damn, that cat looks good! The specs read pretty hot, too.

Edit: Can you imagine the OS envy on the PC Weenie side of the fence?

How does this upgrade work? If you have Leopard it is only 29 bucks. But do you get only an upgrade disk or do you get a full install disk? I want to clean my hard drive of everything and do a full install. I hate upgrade only disks. It means if anything goes wrong you have to do a two step install.

From the ordering page it looks like to get a full disk you also have to buy iLife and iWork for a 169 total. I have both of those already. I guess I could use another copy but it would be nice to be able to get a copy of just snow leopard complete by itself.

From what I've read Erase and Install is still available but is now in Disk Utility. I believe Disk Utility just looks for a valid install, 10.5 or 10.6.

Ironic that now one of the gripes against OS X is the (comparative) lack of games ....

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/24/09 02:55 PM

Well lack of games was always a gripe and lack of apps all together

What PCers mean by Macs are toys is - good for ages 2 to 6 years of age and stay at home mothers , any real work is done on PCs

Yeah. The real work is getting their PC to work.

Hmm, interesting. So it sounds like I can do a clean install of the system but I cannot zero the drive then instal since there is no system to check for validity?

I guess that is clean enough. I never believed those people who zeroed drives. At least on a Mac.

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/24/09 08:21 PM

The anal retentive can still zero the drive and install. It probably will look for a valid system before the erase then go into the installer when done automagically. wink Erase is erase whether it zeros or not, the drive is still erased.

Zeroing is an Erase option under Security Options. It doesn't hurt anything to zero a drive but I never do. I'm a cheap bastard and like to wring out my equipment, but if I suspect a drive is bad I get rid of it.

HDs constantly check for bad blocks when writing to the disk anyway. Blocks do go bad over time, if the drive writes out too many blocks and runs out of free space to remap the blocks S.M.A.R.T. will show not verified.

Yeah, it's kinda dumb..no, it's really dumb..to bundle the iLife/iWork with it because if you already have it, now you get the pleasure of buying it twice. crazy

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/25/09 07:00 AM

Actually, doesn't writing zeros to the drive eradicate all data? Simply erasing just blows off the directory so that the data is still there - just not directly accessible. That data can come back to haunt you sometimes.

Yes, that part is true. The ones and zeros are still there.
Quote:

That part is not true. If a drive can't over-write a one or zero, or if it is reading from a part of the disk where there is no directory entry, there are other problems with it, head alignment, controller stupidity, etc, that zeroing won't fix.

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/25/09 08:22 AM

Technically the data could come back to haunt you but only if the FBI got ahold of it and wanted to spend the time unerasing the disk. But people who worry about that also don't use ATM cards, EZ-Pay transponders, credit cards or get subscriptions to the New York Times on -line. Aluminum foil wrapped Moonbats in other words.

Ditto this -- cancelled mine when I realized the time spent waiting for delivery could be spent going into the store, getting the disk, going home, installing, and then spending the weekend doing something else ;-)

That's exactly what I thought too. Why wait for FedEX to show up when I could just go and get it when I want??

I say to those going to the Apple Store, take a video and upload it! laugh

I have to work Friday morning. It's also a 45 minute urban drive to the nearest Apple Store. I'll let FedEX handle it for me. wink

Didn't know that FedEX would let you ride along with them laugh just kidding
You have to get into the whole buying experience and show up at the Apple Store wearing a snow leopard costume and then buy buy buy

I can't afford what I'd want to buy at the Apple Store, so I'll just not face the temptation. laugh

just tried. ah well:

Your item(s) have already been prepared for shipment, so they cannot be cancelled. However, once they ship, you may be able to make a return from the Order details page.

I'm fortunate in that I have two Apple stores within 10 minutes of me; three within 20 ;-)

So I wonder if this is going to be the standard wait-in-humongous-line-while-passersby-look-strangely-at-you deals ... the hype just doesn't seem to be as huge as, say, a full version release ...

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/26/09 07:00 AM

Someone posted somewhere in these snow leopard threads that if you bought a Mac after June 9 you would get snow leopard for $9.95. Where is that post and can someone provide a link to the official announcement of that pricing?

Trying to coax a new buyer down to the store but need proof. Funny, but a search on "june" doesn't get the right hit. Maybe I imagined it.

Re: It's Official: Aug. 28th is when 10.6 is avail - 08/26/09 07:24 AM

Do I have to do everything around here? Found it.

Purchase a new Mac on or after June 8th and upgrade is $9.95.

This includes shipping. I wonder what they do if you show up at the store with a laptop? She is on for 9AM.
