MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/18/04 01:49 PM

Latest one I read was that a guy, who knows a guy who sat next to someone from Motorolla on a train ride was told that Apple & Moto have indeed made an iPhone that works with iPhoto and iTunes as well as have a media slot & USB connection...

Let the BS begin!

(Though many of the rumors we typically hear could *possibly* be true, most are so rediculous that you can't help but enjoy following the frenzy that accompanies them!)

My last 2 cell phones have been Moto's. V600 at present, and a V66 before that. Never had any problems with either. The Nokia I had before I went to Moto was also fine, but Nokia doesn't make a decent flip, and I hate the "candy bars".

Know what I want in a wireless phone? With Motorola, it has to be a V60 and up. The mid-range and low-end phones are some of the worst cell phones ever made.

All carriers will have their trouble spots wherein no phone will get perfect reception. I've had AT&T forever. When I first moved to NYC, I had problems in Manhattan until ATT built up their system. Service has been fairly good in Boca, and improving as they merge their network with Cingular.

Same thing with VM delivery. It's all about the carrier's systems, not the phone.

Funny you should mention. The V600 is supposedly on the list of supported BT phones, but I've never been able to get mine to sync. Not that my life depends on it, but it would be nice to have it do what it do what it say it do.

Also, I had to figure out the somewhat flakey voice-dialing feature (it doesn't like just one word entries, like Bryan or Work or Home). After figuring this out, voice-dialing works like a charm.

Other than these two things, this phone is rock-solid!

The 8100 gets excellent reception plus I can use the phone heavily off a full charge and still not run the battery down in a day. Last year I explored switching to Nextel and had the Motorola i730 phone. The battery life between it and my 8100 is laughable. Nearing the end of the day, the i730 was always in desperate need of being recharged, plus the ear piece was tinny and harsh comparatively.

One last item. Last winter, while getting out of my car one night, the 8100 fell out of my pocket and hit the deck, although I didn't realize it. Later, the temperatures dipped to around zero. The next morning, I discovered my phone on the ground next to my car. I fired it up and it worked perfectly .. never a problem with it.

The phone has a camera which isn't too bad ..

.. although it is what it is: a "camera" in a phone. Carp,

I hate to break it to you, but Motorolla consistantly makes some of the best phones on the market, as voted not only by the public, but by industry insiders. The problems you're having have nothing to do with the phone, and everything to do with the fact that you live on a tiny little Island with one cell tower and lousy service from Nextel.

As far as your friends who have no problem... they're all liars. There isn't a cell phone service or phone available in the entire world that doesn't have dead spots, occassional outtages, etc...
In reply to:

I had to figure out the somewhat flakey voice-dialing feature

ATT Wireless offers a subscription feature called VoiceDial, which blows away the on-board voice dialing feature on any phone. It uses a web-based address book that you can set up and maintain online or by voice. You can store thousands of names (including up to 4 numbers per name). You just dial #121, and say "Call Matt at home", for instance, and your call is placed instantly. And once you end the call, you have the option to place another call without redialing #121. The voice recognition technology is superb. Even amidst loud ambient sound, the system "understands" you 95% of the time. I've been able to place calls from the train station platform while a train is entering or leaving the station! Even the rush-hour streets of Manhattan rarely interfered.

Re: MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/19/04 10:40 AM

Natcherly. A more expensive phone will have a better battery or use it more efficiently, and a better antenna (both of which have an impact on reception). But neither will overcome uneven service coverage.

Re: MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/19/04 10:43 AM

I used to think it was Nextel service.
My partner who sits in the same office as me and works on the same project as me has no problems but he has an i35 and I have an i88. The others have the Moto flip phone and no problems either.

However the i88 phones all have the same problems.
The first phone I got was the i35 that went bad then I got the i88 crap - So it seems that the Moto flip phones are much better.

Now if it was the Nextel service that would effect all phones would it not ?

Re: MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/19/04 02:32 PM

Most on-board address books allow you to designate specific icons to each number you enter: Home, Work, Mobil, Main, Other, etc., so you can enter more than one no. for the same person and distinguish which no. is home or cell or whatever. Your's doesn't have that feature?

Re: MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/19/04 02:42 PM

I don't know if the Motorolas can do this....

But on a Nokia, you can assign caller groups a profile. In that profile, you can choose every specific phone behavior possible to associate with that group.

For instance, you have set the phone to only ring for certain groups of people. On the other phones I've seen, you can assign ringtones per group, but not silence.

When I had a Nokia, I had a caller group called "Family." Not sure about the group thing never actually explored that deeply but unique ringtones for each caller, yes. When my office calls, the phone farts. When it's my wife, it's the sound of clanking chains. When it's my gir... ah, never mind.

Re: MW Rumors.... it's that time again - 12/19/04 05:16 PM

It's not that I can't tell my friends from co-workers, but when you deal with 10 kids, 10 social workers, the independent living team (8 people), 2 co-workers, relatives, colleges, high schools counselors and teachers, the admin office + the workers there...that's a lot to scroll through, and that doesn't include 7 siblings, parents, friends, other relatives.
