Mail+Keychains+Sync HELP!

Mail+Keychains+Sync HELP! - 06/27/11 08:31 AM

OK, what have I done now?
Mail won't keep passwords.
Keychain has double, triple entries.
MobileMe Sync to Keychains, won't.
Now my Mail is screwed up at work AND home.

Is it safe to delete all keychains and start from scratch?
Can I back them up and reinstall as necessary? (I still have the old backup from my G5, if needed).
Keychain First Aid did nothing…

The least mind bending, for me anyway, smirk would be for you to just delete all of the entries and just let it rebuild.

First, before deleting them all, you can go through Keychain, double click on a dupe entry, click the Show Password box in the lower left of the Info window that comes up to retrieve the Password and Account name. Write them down, then delete the entry from the Keychain list. This will make it easier to rebuild as you'll know what your account names and passwords are. If there are different passwords and account names for the dupe entries you'll have to figure out which one is the right one. After deleting the Keychain entries, if you're not sure which log-in info is correct, when rebuilding the keychain don't click the box that says Remember Password until you're sure.

Once you're sure of the right password, to get the dialog that comes up to enter the password again, you'll probably have to quit the app. I know Mail works like that. If you enter the password and tell it to not remember, it will still let you access the account until you quit the program, then the next time you try to access the account after quitting the program it will throw up the log-in window and you can then click Remember Password when you're sure you have the right log in info.

The less mind bending, the better. wink

Should I do it on my Work and Home Macs?

Edit: If I Reset my keychain, it says my current keychain will be set aside, and a new one with factory defaults. I think I'll try that first…

Actually the first step would be to go to all devices and set your sync options to Manual, then turn off your MobileMe sync on all devices for now, to make sure you don't get bad data syncing. On one machine then perform the maintenance on it to get Keychain right.

After getting it right, go to MM preferences on the fixed machine, turn on Sync. Click the Advanced button on the bottom right. Then click the Reset Sync Data button. Tell it to replace what's On MM with sync info from this computer, Replace.

Before doing the Replace make sure everything, Keychain and whatever else you sync is what you want.

Then go to the other machines, do the same as above in the second paragraph except choose to sync data On this computer with sync info from MM.

After that you can then go to each machine and set it to sync automatically or whatever interval you want.

Well you can as long as you're sure of all of your login info.

When you think it's right do the replace thing to the other machines from MM.

Glad to help, off to my paying job now. grin
