Wiping a hard drive on an iMac

Wiping a hard drive on an iMac - 09/24/10 08:48 AM

So, I pulled off all the data from my inlaws iMac via Firewire target disk mode.

Now, I want to wipe that drive but not sure how to do this since it won't start up from a CD.

Can I remotely wipe it via FW target disk mode? If so, how?

Are you mounting the iMac in FW target mode on another machine? If so, I would think that you could use Disk Utility on the host machine to securely wipe the drive.

Yes,, you should be able to do it via FW. If you're just wiping it to throw it out... then the hammer method is best.

I may try to sell it for parts

When I have bought used Macs from PowerMax, they do not come with the original disks. Then you look on eBay and end up paying around $50 !!

Which reminds me. I read an interesting proposal on the internet about changing software agreements. Something like we never, never own any software we buy and cannot sell it to someone else. We just rent it! I'll have to look that up again.

They mentioned OEM disks we see on eBay. One would not be able to sell those either.

But, I guess you could get a few bucks for a keyboard, mouse, memory and other "lose parts" huh?

I saw for sale on eBay "junker" Macs very cheap. The shipping would be 40 or 50 dollars though, wouldn't it?

Kate, I was talking about the hard drive, which I'm doing now via Disk Utility & FW target disk mode.

I may take it apart just to see the insides.

John,

I was addressing, not very explicitly I guess, "I may try to sell it for parts"

One part would be the disks that came with the Mac. Someone might need them cause they lost theirs.

Then I did a no-no. [ smile] I segued into another topic. So I just started another thread.

Please forgive me, as I know you will [ smile].

Re: Wiping a hard drive on an iMac - 09/24/10 02:44 PM

oh...sorry, I get it now.

As for the disks that came with the iMac, I thought they were machine specific? As in you can't use them on any other iMac?

Re: Wiping a hard drive on an iMac - 09/24/10 02:47 PM

I think that's a myth, unless the software restore disks are machine specific.

Re: Wiping a hard drive on an iMac - 09/24/10 03:01 PM

If by machine specific you refer to the individual Mac serial number [one Mac only], no.

I bought an eMac from PowerMax. The Mac Disks for that model would have been extra and I saw on ebay they were cheaper, no shipping, so I bought there.

I think if you had eMac disks that came with your eMac, they would not work on an iMac, same year make as the eMac or Mac Pro big guy Mac. So specific in that they will work on the same model/year as the Macs put out in any certain time.

You are going to sell a drive that won't boot?
I wasn't saying smash the whole computer with a hammer.

They are two separate things. You can boot the computer from a HD or a CD. You cannot boot a HD from anything.

Hard drive:

CD (optical) drive:

Neither contains a CPU. They are merely read/write storage devices. Neither one is a computer. You can't boot them.

Just caught this. I didn't say that, I said it wouldn't boot/start up from a CD. By it I meant the computer.

I still don't understand what this has to do with your lawn mower not starting and you selling your old freezer for parts. I must be missing something.
