A "See-through bra" for your Ti? - 10/28/01 05:58 PM

I have a "see - through bra" made by x-pel. Now before you sickos get excited(it's for the front of my car, bumper, mirrors, headlamps and hood etcetera). Its a very thin (about 8 mils), very strong, optically clear film by 3M which was developed originally for desert-storm. Helicopter blades were getting chewed up unmercifully in the desert sands there until this break-through product was applied to thier carbon fiber blades. It has since found a niche market being used on various vehicle's front ends to protect from stones and scratches and is all but invisible after it drys. Essentially it is custom cut for each model and applied wet with water and squeegeed on and allowed to dry. It can even be stretched around curves and looks beautiful since one has to look really closely to even see it. It's completely dry in 24 hours and completely optically clear in a week or two.

I have always felt this would be ideal for the Ti's top and sides, and perhaps, just perhaps the top face surrounding the trackpad. It is semi-permanent solution that can last for many, many years, however there is a catch. It can be removed without leaving a residue by re-wetting and applying heat such as that from hair dryer. Therefore, I don't think it would survive an application on the Ti's bottom face. It can be purchased by the square foot and would have to be cut to size and later trimmed with an xact-o knife. The raw material isn't cheap. A 12" film costs $6/ft from X-pel.

I haven't tried it, but it's worth consideration for any brave soul who wishes to give it a go. I would suggest it be installed by a professional, trusted vehicle installer.

Here are the sites that I am aware of with the caveat that stongard is much thicker and more difficult to apply. It's used mostly on larger commercial vehicles like buses.

http://www.X-pel.com

http://www.Invinca-shield.com

http://www.stongard.com

Their car kits very somewhat in style, and in stongard's case thickness, but all of these use the same 3M material.

For some reason... X-pels site has been down for sometime, but they are very much still in business.

I'd like to get other opinions on this...

-------------------------------------------
RWoelk
Generating 2048 bits of randomness...

Only the educated are free! -Epictetus
Edited by RWoelk on 10/28/01 01:03 PM (server time).
