Searching Shared Volumes in 10.9?

Searching Shared Volumes in 10.9? - 04/01/14 04:44 PM

Perhaps I am missing something.

I am just wanting to search an external drive for files and invisible files. It used to be pretty easy.

However, every time I use the search feature, it will only allow me to search the start-up volume.

Do I have to use terminal to search the external drive, especially the invisible files (i.e. the private folder)?

Make sure you don't have the volume set to be ignored in Spotlight preferences.

How about an external drive that was not indexed by Spotlight?

How do you know it was not indexed?

Maybe try adding it to Spotlight do not index. Wait a bit, then remove it from do not index.

By external do you mean attached physically, or a networked HFS/FAT/NTFS drive?

It is an older volume. I am trying to find some invisible files and when I try to search via the little search box in the Finder window, it will only allow me to search the start-up volume and not the other drive that is mounted but not the start-up drive.

I did not try the command to show invisible files yet though.

I need to get to the Library's "private" folder from an old back up.

I see now, thx.

Get FileBuddy. The demo of 10 is good for a limited number of launches. Launch it and do a Get Info from its menu, it can see all files and let you change the attributes. Get rid of the dot, change the invisible flag etc.

I bought v.9 a long time back, I use it a lot for my work.

I was able to get things going but had to reinstall the system. Luckily with back-ups it was not that big of a deal other than time.

I did try FileBuddy first but the files I was looking for were mixed in with others and I was unsure which was which so I played it safe.
