Quick Look URL - 10/16/12 05:27 PM
I just noticed that the latest Mail.app give you the option to do a Quick Look on urls that show up as part of an email message. I did that on something that claimed to be from YouTube, and it turns out that it was from a Canadian (those Canuckis!) Viagra/Cialis supplier.
Hmmmm . . . what do they know that I don't?!

I always just hover the pointer over the URL to see what it really is.

Doing that in this case gives you an IP address--not very informative!

It gives a path and the real URL for me.

For some yes, that's what I get. But for this clever little scam no, just the IP numbers.

If it just shows an IP, then you know it's bogus.

And Quick Looking the URL in an email effectively does the same thing as clicking the link. It tells the spammer the email address is valid.

There's been a rash of spoofing. I'm getting it from "Intuit", "Barnes & Noble", "UPS", and several others. Really, the best tell is the actual email addy in the From field. It'll appear like Intuit Customer Support <chippydippydoodoo@whoopsie.com>
