iPhoto problems - 08/29/12 05:29 PM

iPhoto crashes if I even look at it the wrong way.
Since upgrading to Lion, then Mountain Lion, I've had nothing but problems.
I do have a backup, I've deleted everything iPhoto related, reinstalled, reimported, a dozen times at least.
I've got it to stop crashing (for now), but I have so many duplicates, blank events, photos with no thumbnails, etc. it's practically useless.
After reading endless posts on Apple, I deleted Perian, and that stopped the crashing.
I've rebuilt the database, created new libraries, all to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Start from scratch again now that Perian is gone?
I can't believe one of the solutions on Apple's boards is to reinstall the OS.
This isn't Windows, darn it.

Did you try removing com.apple.iPhoto.savedState from HD/Users/you/Library/Saved Application State?

If that alone doesn't work then toss all of the prefs files etc along with that. If the thumbnails can't rebuild correctly you can try Quitting iPhoto then tossing anything in your iPhoto Library that has Thumb at the beginning, then launch iPhoto, it will rebuild them all.

Ctrl-click on the iPhoto Library then go to "Show package contents" to get to the innards.

Well, of course. That's the first thing I did.
ROFLMAO.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Tried a lot of stuff, deleted things, be damned… And yet I've never thought of looking for Application State.

I'll try tomorrow.
It's a brave new world…

The only problem I've had with iPhoto in Lion is I can't use the edit sliders anymore. Every time I try, the photo/screen goes black (since the last 2 or 3 updates). I'm thinking of archiving my iPhoto Library and starting a new one. I have over 4400 photos dating back to Feb, 2003. shocked

What version of iPhoto are you running?

Check out the link below. It seems that there are some problems with Photostream and certain video codecs in Lion.

Re: iPhoto problems - 08/30/12 09:08 AM

Version 9.3.2.
I've read about the 3ivx codec thing, but couldn't find it on my computer.
I will try the other options tonight.
Thanks!

Agreed.
So what's the alternative?

The latest and greatest, of course (9.3.2). laugh

Pixelmator (free in the App Store) Ooops! Not free - $14.99 (worth the price)

Lemke's Graphic Converter (not free, but very capable and feature rich)

Those are image editors. While iPhoto does offer a bit of image editing, that's really not the primary function/intended use of the application.

There's always Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, and perhaps Adobe Photoshop Elements - but not much beyond that for replacing iPhoto.

Agreed. iPhoto is like iTunes in that respect... the big organizer.
DAMM in a junior way.

Both Pixelmator and GC access your iPhoto library quite nicely. I could live without iPhoto since I can organize my photos into folders, etc. quite easily.

Yeah... but when you use iMovie and Aperture and a few others... it's nice because they integrate with iPhoto well. I don't use it though... smile

Re: iPhoto problems - 09/02/12 01:13 PM

Ended up deleting EVERYTHING iPhoto and reinstalled.
Lots of hidden prefs scattered all over the place.
3 hours later, all is well again.
Backups are a goooood thing.
Thanks, Jim.
