Re: Am I alone? - 10/13/09 05:02 PM

I have Tiger on my iBook G4, Leopard on the Mac Pro, and Snow Leopard on the MacBook. I think my old iMac G3 down in the basement has Panther on it, but I haven't used it in a couple of years. I just keep it plugged in down there to keep the battery from dying. My son stole the keyboard when his keyboard broke, so all I can do with it is just keep it plugged in now. Can't use it without a keyboard. frown

My TiBook is also like new but is the 800mhz one. Since I have an iPhone, I never really use it other than keeping it as a back up. I recently checked and it looks like it is only worth $200 or so.

I did cheat and install 10.5 on it via Leopard assist though.

I am running 10.4 on my old iMacs in my outbuildings and security camera server.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 11:34 AM

frown my Tibook is NOT like new.

hey, what's this Lepoardassist thing? will it work for me?

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 12:56 PM

You don't have enough RAM for Leopard.
Posted by: Silver_Moon

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 12:58 PM

If I get more? How much do I need? can I get it on one chip?
Posted by: Silver_Moon

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 12:58 PM

BTW, I can't find the intro.mov! frown
Posted by: MacBozo

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 01:04 PM

512 MB at a minimum. I haven't seen a 1 gig PC 100/133 stick, though, but that would be much better.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 01:22 PM

Ok, I'll see. but I don;t really have the moneym and instead of paying THAT much, I should get a used mac. (at least that's what my grandpa said)

Look for intro.mov in the folder path I posted earlier.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:03 PM

I did, but I had to do it manually because I can't get my router set up for my Mac.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:15 PM

What is the processor speed of the laptop, 500 (PC/100 RAM) or 550 (PC/133 RAM)?

Omni has a 1G chip for $68.99 for PC/133, and $46.99 for PC/100. You get those prices if you go through ramseeker.com If you go straight to Omni it's more. The 512 is $25.99.
Posted by: Silver_Moon

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:16 PM

550.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:36 PM

If your HD is behaving, then the memory upgrade is a no-brainer.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:38 PM

well, The graph on DW said that it was really screwed up.

Did DW want to rebuild the directory?
Posted by: Silver_Moon

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:40 PM

No. It still said it can't. I'll try to post a pic of the graph.

if you want to see the movie... then this has nothing to do with your router. Open a new finder window and follow the path I posted to the movie.
The movie resides on your hard drive.

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 02:44 PM

OK. A RAM upgrade and an 80 gig HD will run between $75 and $125 combined. You can't get a used computer for that.

actually, Michael, I took a video of DW in action in post #449699 here. It shows the graph. I didn't boot from it. http://forums.mactech.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/450037/6

At Setup Assistant, Control click to show Package Contents, then do that again at Transition Section.

I did THAT too! All I could find was the sound file for it.

Michael and Reboot are the gurus here - I hardly ever have problems with my Macs , hence I don't have great trouble shooting experience .

I still can't find it.

I assume then it is not possible to plug the TiBook on the net ?

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 03:32 PM

No. I need to find a way to switch the airport security settings.
Posted by: Jim_

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 03:33 PM

Okay, here's the plan, for me anyway. Run with only the one RAM chip for a few days like everybody suggested. With all the problems you've had with it I won't spend anymore time unless you make sure it's stable with the one chip. I also would not recommend upgrading RAM and HD until you know it is stable.

As far as DW goes you're making more out of the directory report than it is. On mine I ran it and have 203,000 out of 1,561,000 items out of order. It doesn't mean anything is broken, the directory that holds the info where things are on the disk is just fragmented.

You can't "fix" the boot drive unless you boot off of the DW CD. With the small amount of RAM you have DW probably won't be able to repair anything anyway. It needs 512 minimum usually.

To check the HD follow that link, and scroll down to how to run fsck on the HD from a single user mode boot up.

So run it for a few days like it is and let us know how it's going.

Well, the top RAM chip has been out since yesterday and it's stable! smile
Posted by: Silver_Moon

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 03:52 PM

update: just ran fsck and it said it modified stuff. My dad was walking past and noticed the screen and he said "what did you DO!?" "it's single-user mode." "?" "you could call it the Mac OS X equivalent of the DOS interface." "ooohhhh!" laugh
Posted by: Jim_

Re: Am I alone? - 10/14/09 04:23 PM

If it modified stuff run it until it doesn't. It will say something like Macintosh HD appears to be okay.

Actually, I have a USB Bluetooth dongle and a Bluetooth keyboard that works on it. So, in a pinch, if I needed it, I could resurrect it and actually use it again. Sort of like Frankenstein rises again! LOL.

I have a couple of these RAM sticks. I don't know if they'd work in your laptop--Reboot or Michael can figure that out, I hope. Anyway, if they are good to go on your laptop, you're welcome to them.

edit: not a reply to you, Trey!

I have the 400 - and though checking online might tell you these old tibooks aren't worth much, of your case is anything near in good condition, you can get more just for the case than you can for the whole working mac - the guy at the genius bar who got all hot and sweaty over my immaculate 400MHz said I could probably get around 600 by breaking it for parts.
