Finder not working - 09/09/08 02:52 PM

So...now my Finder won't run after restarting (updated QT).

Any help? I can't access anything except my Applications Folder. I don't have Leopard here, but will have it in the morning.

my photos

Re: Finder not working - 09/09/08 03:15 PM

Have you tried another reboot? Maybe shut it down entirely and then boot up?

Re: Finder not working - 09/09/08 03:15 PM

Can you create and/or switch to another User and see if the same problem occurs? Or start in Safe Mode?

I would create a new one, but when I open up System Prefs and try to, it won't let me.

my photos

Re: Finder not working - 09/09/08 03:42 PM

Get Yasu from VersionTracker. It runs all the usual (and unusual) troubleshooting and maintenance steps for you so you don't have to waste your time on them.

I suggest:

1. Reboot with Shift held (does a disk repair without needing the DVD, and enters Safe Boot mode).

2. Run Yasu with all boxes checked EXCEPT don't bother clearing your logs (they might be useful), your cookies, or your bookmark icons. Some also say not to clear your system caches unless you have to. Your call.

3. Let it reboot the machine when done (which will exit Safe Boot).

You may find your problems are gone and you never need to know or care what caused them.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Re: Finder not working - 09/09/08 04:02 PM

You could try re-applying the latest OS update. If it's not possible to run it, do you have another computer you can attach it to via Firewire Target Disk mode?

Re: Finder not working - 09/09/08 04:05 PM

When I download stuff, it doesn't appear on the desktop since the Finder isn't working. So, I can't run it.

my photos

No, since I cannot access my Finder, I can't get to my Diskwarrior.

Supposed to meet up with my brother today and get Leopard off of him. I'll have more info then if I can fix it that way.

my photos

Re: Finder not working - 09/10/08 09:19 AM

Firewire target disk mode would let you do a disk repair, if he brings his Mac along. (Also a way to access files you may urgently need.)

Good luck!

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Re: Finder not working - 09/10/08 03:06 PM

I'm currently booted up off of the 10.5 install DVD. Checked permissions and verified disk. Everything appears OK. Next I'll boot it via Firewire Target Disk Mode and save anything and reinstall OSX.

I wonder if this is tied into the problems I had with iTunes (music not playing all the way through before going to another song) & Aperture (not opening up a library after restart, said something about permissions). I'm betting it is.

my photos

ok, now THIS is weird.

Booted up the Powermac via firewire disk mode. That's fine on that end. Now the finder is quitting on my iMac! it started to show the HD's from my PM and then..now nothing is on the desktop and it's restarting/quitting. WTF.

my photos

Well, by moving the main HD to another bay and now it works. So, it's either the bus or controller or whatever for that bay. Wonder if I should trust the other one and how much would it cost to fix?

my photos

Re: Finder not working - 09/10/08 08:34 PM

Unfortunately just the logic board will be more than $400. You can get one from blueraven for $450 with exchange, my guess is Apple will be a bit more than that, plus installation. The logic board must be calibrated for cooling when replaced.

Your best bet is to get a third party SATA controller. Sonnet has one for $200, probably cheaper elsewhere, that can handle 4 drives at 3.0 Gbps, the stock G5 SATA is 1.5 Gbps. Sonnet also has a 1.5 Gbps for 2 drives for $80.

Maybe just a bad cable?

Tried an Open Firmware reset? Re: Finder not working - 09/10/08 09:19 PM

Also try leaving the machine powered down AND unplugged for 24 hours. I've seen that reset the NVRAM when no other process would, thus bringing Firewire back to a machine that had none!

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

I didn't do it on purpose. I just got tired of messing with it for the night and left it unplugged. Next morning all's well, the problem never came back. Some capacitor or component finally released it's load of electrons.

------>#1 - JD's Trivia game

------>#2 - MM-MCF Trivia game

Re: Finder not working - 09/11/08 04:21 AM

They also have a card for only two drives that is much cheaper. It's a 1.5 Gbps card, like your built in SATA. The card you posted is 3.0 Gbps.

You do have one good controller still left on the board.

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_serial_ata.html

------>#1 - JD's Trivia game

------>#2 - MM-MCF Trivia game

I was testing the mac with the Main HD. This is the HD that (I thought) was giving me a hard time with the Finder.

I have had it in both bays, with no other HD in there. And it works fine.
