Editing the audio in a video file

Editing the audio in a video file - 12/03/07 03:14 PM

As part of my counselling training, we get video'd practising on each other (embarrassing but useful - behold all the weird unconscious body language...)

I get given the results on a DVD to view at my leisure - but the camera mic being crap, the audio is too quiet to hear properly. I have the software to enhance the audio if it were a separate audio file, but what I want to do is strip the audio out of the video, clean it up, and then plumb it back into the video file. I've got HandBrake to convert the DVD content to e.g. mp4, but does anyone know if there's a way to edit the audio channel separately from the video, and then drop it back in again?

- padmavyuha

[color:purple]A lopsided man runs best along the little side-hills of success
- Frank Moore Colby

As far as I know QuickTime can do those things. While QT Pro provides more features and options, the plain version is quite capable.

Use Handbrake to convert your movie to MP4 and then open it in QT.

Export the audio track to its own file from QT. Edit as necessary using QT or whatever you have available.

In the Movie Properties window, select the old audio track and hit the Delete key.

Open your new audio track in QT, use the Select All command and Copy it to memory. Then switch to the video version of your MP4 file and paste the new audio track using the Add to Selection & Scale command under Edit.

M i c h a e l (OFI)

Nay, alas - all those options are QTPro only. It'll cost 20 to upgrade (and that's just until Apple bring out QT8, isn't it?) so I'll look for other options first. Thanks for pointing out the facilities in QTPro, though.

[color:purple]A lopsided man runs best along the little side-hills of success
- Frank Moore Colby

Sorry, I didn't realize these features are exclusive to the pro version. I am really out of touch with the differences between pro and non-pro versions and have been since '98 I guess, when I upgraded to QT Pro 3.0.

It's just one of those tools one must have in their video/audio tool box.

Good luck with your project though.

M i c h a e l (OFI)
