How to automate tests of web-based application?

Hi to All!

I have to automate regression tests of web-based application.
This is financial web-based application, which cooperate with mysql database.
I know, that test automation of regression is the best solution but I don't have experience in this area. Can you advise what should I choose and how should I start?
