Wireless network card - 01/26/08 11:54 AM

Hello Folks!
I have replaced my iMac (round base with no airport card) which was connected by ethernet there and brought it home.
Where I have placed the iMac doesn't have ethernet and I have to get some sort of USB or FireWire external one. Does anyone have a suggestion of what would be a good one for me?
Thanks, I really have missed posting, but peek in often.

Good to see you Sherman (this time not a ghost from the past!) I'm not sure what it is that you're missing. The iMac has an ethernet port, doesn't it? So are you looking for some sort of external wi-fi dongle? Would it be possible to install an Airport card? If you can't find one, how a bout something like this, which plugs into the computer's ethernet port and gives you wireless connectivity? I've used similar devices in the past, and the computer simply sees the connection as if it were an ethernet connection--very easy to set up. I wouldn't trust a USB dongle. I've never heard of one working well on a Mac.

   
Edited by yoyo52 on 01/26/08 03:33 PM (server time).

I would recommend getting an original Airport card off of ebay and popping it in. You just take off the 4 screws on the bottom.

In the long run it is cleaner and less configuration hassles.

The gang's all here now.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game

Which model of the "table lamp?" Is it an early model or a later model w/USB 2.0? The early models took a 802.11b type AP card and the USB 2.0 models can take an AP Extreme card (802.11b/g). You can check the specs at EveryMac.com

You are correct, thx for clarifying. The 1 Ghz models and higher had the Extreme card.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game
