Obviously the Jeb! system is not working in south Florida.

Teen finds baby lying in lawn chair near Fort Lauderdale

By Daniella Aird
Staff Writer
Posted August 5 2003

A newborn boy was found abandoned Monday in a lawn chair in front of a home near Fort Lauderdale, officials said.

Deidre Jones, 15, found the baby, about 2 weeks old, swaddled in a blanket and lying quietly in a plastic chair in front of her home in the 3400 block of Northwest 17th Court about 11:30 a.m.

In the blazing midmorning sun, the baby was wearing a diaper, a T-shirt, newborn booties and a knit cap. Part of the umbilical cord was still attached.

Deputies think the baby was left unattended for about an hour.

"I saw movement on the seat, and I thought it was an animal," Jones said. "Then I saw it was a baby. He didn't make any noise. He was just moving his head around."

Jones ran inside her house and told her grandmother, Estella Nelson, who called 911 and went next door to get help from neighbors. Broward County Fire-Rescue workers arrived about noon.

Meanwhile, Nelson's neighbor, Charlotte Jackson, went to another neighbor's house for diapers and a bottle.

"His eyes were open; he was adorable," said Jackson, 37, a mother of four who changed and fed the infant. "He was a little dehydrated from being out in the sun for so long."

The baby was taken to Broward General Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla said the Department of Children & Families would take custody of the infant, as is standard procedure.

"Luckily, they found the child quickly, and he wasn't harmed," Calzadilla said. "But this is not a designated, safe place for the child."

A state law passed in 2000 allows a mother to leave her infant at a hospital or fire-rescue station as long as the baby is 3 days old or younger.

The mother can remain anonymous and won't be prosecuted.

"The people who did this must have been in a very bad predicament," Jones said. "But I'm glad they chose our house instead of putting [the baby] in a garbage can. How can somebody leave something so precious on a chair?"

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the baby's parents is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.

A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information that could lead detectives to the child's parents.

[color:green]People have died in their hundreds because the greed of a minority is accepted in the U.S.A.
