PithHelmet is a freeware plugin for Safari that blocks adds, including those awful blinking Flash ads, and the midi loops that some pages have.

There is a fair amount of control of what to keep and what to trash too. If you see offending images/ads on a site, just by right-clicking you can add it to the rules. Turning on and off all filtering can be done just by highlighting the filtering checkbox under Safari's menu.

Also, you can easily make rules to allow certain servers and types of ads. Specifically, I'm thinking about the ads on macminute here. You can keep the google ads and other ones for sites that are important to you, but block those evil flash ones at other places. I love it.

Turn this thing on in Safari, then boot up Explorer (if you still have it) and go to a couple of places with both browsers. Its really amazing. By blocking popups and flash and the loading of some ads the speed difference is considerable... on top of the speed of Safari alone.

Edited by Trog on 07/11/03 00:09 AM (server time).

PithHelmet was a very under-publicized add-on for Safari. Under-publicized most likely because web sites with the annoying adds don't want you to block the ads out, so they aren't likely to give free advertising to a program that kills advertising!

Glad to see PH working again. I know many folks were upset when it didn't work with Safari 1.0 when it was released.
